upsetting?

I've always wanted to watch this movie but have yet to as this is pretty sad but my mum reckons I would find it extremely upsetting! I'm a sucker for animals.....i have cried over RSPCA adverts! I am desperate to watch it though, should i go for it??

It will sadden any animal lover as it involves the horrors of poaching and depletion of animal populations in Africa for profit. It is an important movie to see, but you might want to read some articles on Fossey and her life's work first to make the movie less jarring.

I just saw it again for the first time since it came out in 1988. I also love animals, and I can tell you, it was extremely painful to watch. The movie first introduces you to the members of the gorilla band, so you feel you know their culture and for some, their individual personalities. Only after you have been welcomed into the gorilla family via Diane Fosse's relationship with them, do you see them get dismembered, kidnapped and killed. It felt very personal to see the suffering of two of the gorillas in particular, who Diane was very close to. Frankly, I was a lot more moved by their deaths than by hers.

I first saw this movie when I was 11 years old and it made my cry hysterically... and since then I've made a point of never watching any upsetting movies with animals. However, I'm glad I saw it. It's my all-time favourite movie. I just tend to skip the part where Digit is murdered whenever I watch it now.

i skip where Digit gets murdered too.
its so sad i cant bare to watch that part again.

reply

It was really really sad when Digit was murdered. I loved him, he was like her favorite Gorilla. That was very upsetting. Also at the end before she dies, she sees Digit's group again, and Digit's baby, i found that sad too.

thanks for the SPOILER ALERT!!!

I've read Fossey's book and another about her. She was a great person whose passion was misunderstood and underappreciated. You who say her loss was less moving than the gorillas remember its actions of pioneers in the movement like her who keep what little gorilla population there is going. If you don't feel her pain as a murdered American woman on a mountain in Africa trying to preserve the little bit of sanity she had found in an insane world then keep trying, you will get it.

reply

She totally dismissed the human beings who lived in the area and those who even worked for her. Her death didn't REALLY upset me. She came off as a spoiled colonizer coming to Africa like any other colonizer and proclaiming that things like the mountains and gorillas were "hers". I really couldn't stand the woman.

Im a big lover of animals and eventhou i adored this movie, i found it very strong
during the moments of the deaths. This movie shows the disrespect the humanity
has for life which belongs to animals. And to tell you the truth, i´d rather
see a human die from agony, then an animal.

Humans dont deserve earth as it is at the moment.

I cried in RSPCA ads too lol. And I cried in the movie, but it was still an awesome movie. Just great...in a sad way.

I bawled my eyes out and hated mankind for days...watch it but have lots of tissues.

Most upsetting is the lack of mist. Pretty much none until about three quarters of the way through. I feel somewhat robbed.

False advertising that is.

Anyway it's hard to get upset when the monkeys are so obviously people in suits.

Dick, this is nuts.

reply

Huh? Most of the shots used real gorillas. The film is upsetting but not all the scenes are.

There's nothing in it worse than this short clip:

If you were okay with that, you'll be fine hun

I cried like a baby, but it was worth it, inspiring.
