Anna's parents (spoilerish)

Anna's parents are conspicuous by their absence here. Any speculation on why they didn't attend Thanksgiving dinner with Anna's grandparents? It occurred to me that Anna's mother has strong reason to be estranged from her father. It seems that the way Anna raised her child could have been a reaction to some of the dysfunction that started generations earlier in her family.

I found this film very moving and provocative, and I don't think it receives the respect it deserves. Yes, it's dreary – that's not a bad thing by any means – but it's extremely compelling and provides no easy answers. Diane Keaton gives her usual stellar performance, Liam Neeson is compelling but underused, and Jason Robards and Ralph Bellamy are pivotal in their stern roles. Ultimately, I'm not sure whom I side with here, but everyone states their case well. 8/10 stars.
