Theresa should of demanded to stay with her mother!

She should of insisted! Instead she ended up on the streets.

I didn't get the impression that her mother rejected her. I got the impression that it was Theresa herself that refused to go, because she felt she'd be burdening an already-sick & burdened woman.

But it never made sense to me why she didn't go home, once she had no other options.
I mean My God...she is going to lose her child and she STILL doesn't risk it?!
She could have gone home, got a job, helped out.
The movie should have come up with a different reason that Theresa couldn't go home.

I think I remember Theresa saying her mother and sister lived in a trailer park so there wasn't much room. I would of slept on the floor of the trailer rather than loose my child or end up in those horrible homeless shelters!

By the end of the film I'd forgotten that Theresa's mother was still living. Even if Theresa didn't ask to stay there, surely she would've asked on behalf of her daughter while she continued to look for work, housing, etc. Because yeah, a floor is better than a sidewalk—and is certainly better than giving up your daughter.

There is also no indication how far her mother was away from whatever city they were living in. Also doubtful that she had the money go get there anyway.

Agreed! I would have slept on the floor of the bathroom if I had to!
I always felt the writers made a mistake in having Theresa have family.
If she had no one, the story would have made more sense.

As it was, it made no sense at ALL that Theresa would decide to permanently GIVE UP her child rather than move to a crowded trailer!

Originally, she didn't want to go home to her mother b/c her mother was sick with diabetes and was living in a trailer.

When she made the decision to surrender Hillary, however, she was thinking of a more long-term solution. Yes, she and Hillary could have moved in with her mother temporarily, but how would that have impacted Hillary's life? Would she have had gotten the ongoing medical care she needed? (Remember, she had suffered from lead poisoning and was on medication). Would she have had access to a decent education? (She'd already missed quite a bit of school.) What if Theresa's mother died? Would they have been able to stay in the trailer, or would they have had to move once again? Theresa specifically said that her whole family was trapped in a cycle of poverty and she wanted Hillary to break the cycle.

I honestly don't know what I would have done if I had been in Theresa's shoes. All I can say is that it's an extremely difficult decision that no mother should have to make.

It's been so long since I've seen this, but I seem to recall a scene where someone asked her if she had any relatives. She said something to the effect that there was no one in the area.

She tells her boss (who she tries to move in with for a while) that she has no family or friends, but she did.
I guess she said this so the woman would feel bad for her.
