Wouldn't someone in Theresa's situation...

... have suspected that calling the Health Department on her landlord might land her and her daughter back on the street? I'm surprised she didn't choose to invest in some rat traps instead.

I agree. I posted about that some time ago; it made little sense for Theresa to do what she did.
I'm not sure if she thought she'd be kicked out, but I DO feel she should have considered other options first!!!! Calvin Reed was not too bright either, why didn't HE suggest rat traps or even rat poison first?!!

And he never even offers to let Theresa & her daughter stay with him on a couch.
I understand that there needs to be limits, but my God this is a woman he knows well who has to GIVE UP HER CHILD FOREVER....and he doesn't even offer?

But then with Theresa's thought processes, it seemed odd from the start that this woman who'd been rather poor her entire life wouldn't even consider that a bed in a shelter wouldn't be available?!
Come on!

I felt bad for her by default, but Hilary was the real victim here.
Theresa, in almost every part of the film, made some kind of very serious mistake.
During every instance where things were going OK, she'd mess it up.

The biggest one was when she left work early without asking permission.
WHAT?! You already know your job is in jeopardy and that you need it to live....why not ask for the day off?

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.

Penfold, shush.

Did Theresa even have any money for rat repellents?

IIRC in the beginning of the film she talked to her coworkers about taking time off of work to find a new apartment, and they told her that she would immediately be replaced by a minority woman.

I would have scraped together SOME money for rat traps, at least!
She should have known calling the Health dept. would be a big mistake.

True. But unlike what might or might not have happened if she called out sick for a day or asked for 1 day off, sneaking OUT of work is a certain way of losing your job!
How did she think no one would notice?!
