Like Eugene O'Neill with (SPOILERS)

The story's like some Eugene O'Neill work, but with a happy ending.

How does it end? I want to buy it but only if I know it has a happy ending. Does Hackman get together and live happily ever after with teri garr?

reply

Well, yeah, something like that. It's similar to a Eugene O'Neill play, because it starts off mellow and casual, then takes a somewhat miserable and dark turn, but unlike most Eugene O'Neill plays, the movie decides to "chill out" by the end and pretty much reverses almost everything that was going wrong for the characters and even adds a few somewhat comical touches.

Details please my friend. Please.

Fine, they do end up together, yes, after a whole lot of (sometimes pretty annoying, if justified) naysaying and they do save his small beach restaurant / bar for the time being. And the two supporting characters who were also in pretty desperate life threatening situation end up okay as well.

Thanks Man. Now, I will buy it. I appreciate it!

You're welcome, hope you enjoy it. One final note - in this movie, it's Garr who pushes the relationship issue, not Gene, since he's a depressed grieving widower.

Hi Alfabeta,
I went out and bought the movie and just watched it! It was excellent! I really enjoyed all of the performances. It is a shame that we don't see Teri Garr anymore. She was very lovely in this. Hackman was great as usual. A very nice feel good movie.
Thanks again!
Rob

Not sure I'd necessarily call it a feel good movie, but glad to hear you enjoyed it. Too bad Hackman retired from acting. If you're a fan of Garr, you might want to check out Rosanna Arquette's documentary "Searching for Debra Winger (2002)", where she interviews various actresses (including Garr at one brief point) on the subject of aging and how it often kills careers for actresses in Hollywood once they hit 40. Unfortunately, Garr fell victim to that unwritten rule as well. When it comes to her lesser (known) movies, Garr also had a fun role in a P.I. flick called Fugitive Nights: Danger in the Desert (1993) (TV) with Sam Elliott.
