Gen Y asks uncle half way thru "Is this a comedy?"

He was serious. A smart boy in a good college.

I was taken back by the question. I went home and gave it some thought. I have come to the conclusion that the vast majority of the comedies made today are essentially adults acting like 11 year old boys. (You can thank Will F for this or maybe it stated with Jim C.) My nephew was not used to seeing 40 some-things acting more or less like adults, hence the question. Maybe if Otto let loose a couple of farts on Ken...

Comedies where all the actors act their age are pretty rare today.

Most people today need everything spelled out for them because they're too stupid to get subtlety. They need everything explained.

This is very true.

It also has a plot and good dialogue; most comedies lately have only a premise and some sight gags.

This is the same generation that thought Airplane! was stupid and laughed heartily at Paul Blart: Mall Cop, so I would take anything they say with a grain of salt. Hell, I'd take it with the whole Morton Salt factory.

"I was taken back by the question."

No.

You were taken ABACK, not BACK. Sheesh.

English is not brain surgery, why can't you know the difference between 'back' and 'aback'?

reply

I was taken BACK by this necro. Seven years back, to be precise.

And aback. A two-fer.

Actors in “A fish called Wanda” acted their age?

All comedy has a juvenile element. If you want a actors acting their age, watch a drama.

To me, this film just didn’t land. It could be that it hasn’t aged well. I still laugh, to this day, with “Trains, Plains and Automobiles”. But I didn’t find this film to be funny.

The biggest thing for me is that the characters were unlikable. There is not one of them I was rooting for.
