17 children and a leper colony?!

In the postscripts Archie and Wanda are married in Rio, have 17 children and found a leper colony. As many times as I have watched this movie, I have never grasped the significance of these seemingly random details (other than Rio) stitched onto the end. They certainly don't seem to advance the comedy any. Thoughts?

Those postscripts were on all the VHS copies of this movie I've ever owned, but when I watched it on DVD last night, I noticed they were gone. The film certainly didn't seem any less funny because of it.
