Am I the only one who loves this film?

I wish the DVD was available somewhere. I just love it.

Not only you,I like it.Not just like it...I think this movie will be in my memories till I die..

reply

Well, it's good to know. I've just seen it again tonight and it has a really weird atmosphere and a quirky kind of /drama / humour that I just love.

Love this film! Saw it repeatedly when I first got the video some 20 odd years ago. I've been seeing it on the MGM cable channels when I travel to Asia. It's pure Sam Shepard even though it's way lighter than most of his plays. Donald Moffat & Charles Durning steal the show, ofcourse. Jessica Lange, patricia Arquette, Tess Harper - what a cast! They should revive this as a minor American treasure. All of Sam Shepard's works should. It's infuriating to have some 2007 war film pop up every time I search for this little gem.

So in the end, the father is going to shoot the horse?

reply

The father plans to shoot the horse, but he decides not to.

reply

Where do you get the idea that he decides NOT to shoot the horse? All we see is him, carrying the rifle, leading the horse off into the woods.

reply

Sorry, I don't remember this film well enough to answer your question. It's been almost two years since I've seen it. Maybe someone else can expound?

reply

I have watched this movie often and the ending has him walking off into the woods leading the horse, carrying his rifle. There is no scene where he actually shoots it but they don't give any hint that he does not shoot it. It was left hanging.

It was Katie who decided not to shoot the horse after first agreeing to do it.

Thanks for the clarification. I remember very little about this film almost three years after I've watched it, but I remember your post from a few months ago so perhaps there is hope for me.

reply

Yeah, I like it too. I digitized my VHS so I have a DVD, but that's all I can find. It's not even on NETFLIX!

It's showing on the THIS over the air network. Not on their schedule so I had to do a search on Charles Durning to find it.

Mel is a pretty major character and not even listed.

I sure hope he doesn't go through with it. I think Mel redeemed himself.

I found the dialogue a little too precious for its own good, but the performances are strong. 6/10 stars from me.

You're right: I meant precious. I stand corrected.

It's BS that this movie has a 4.8 when other current indie crap rates much higher. This is definitely quirky indie filmmaking but I see no reason not to enjoy it anf get a smile out of it. This has finally been released on DVD in widescreen but you will not find it at Best Buy you have to order it from AMAzon or Oldies.com or something. It's like $26 but it's in widescreen. I would be wary of anyone who doesn't at least smile or chuckle once during this movie. Gret movie for an overcast holiday!

Yea, neither precocious nor precious seems to fit in the sentence. I'd really be interested in what Warped record means here.

I meant the speech was affected and overly refined.
