Kurt Russell vs. Dale Midkiff

Diehard Elvis fans prefer Kurt Russell as Elvis over Dale Midkiff. Actually, what they prefer is the Elvis that's depicted in Elvis the Movie instead of Elvis and Me. People just don't want to believe their King was that messed up. Elvis was never a bad person. He was just a man who wasn't mentally equipped to handle the kind of fame and fortune that came his way. Instead of handling it, he escaped into a world of drugs which altered his personality over time. That doesn't make him a bad person, just a human being. When made up, Russell does physically resemble Elvis more, but Midkiff possesses the natural charisma that caused the world to fall in love with Elvis. This charisma is evident in Midkiff's performance of the King. He never received the credit he deserved for his portrayal of Elvis. He gives Elvis an emotional depth that Russell didn't bring in his performance. Russell's performance focused more on the physical side of Elvis instead of the emotional side. Elvis the Movie also focused on Elvis' life before the drugs turned him into a different person. Fame and power can be a drug in itself and it takes an unusual person to keep all that in perspective. As great as Elvis was, he was swept into a world he ultimately couldn't handle. This post is not meant as a cut against Elvis or Russell, whom I love by the way. It’s simply meant to give credit to Midkiff who is a very talented and overlooked actor.

I can't believe I'm actually writting this (in 2008 on an Elvis and Me message board) but I totally agree with you.

Midkiff's performance is totally underrated. He did bring an incredible depth to Elvis and you can actually witness his evolving process. His performance starts with a shallow view of Elvis (what you'd expect) and then slowly Midkiff pulls back each layer and delves deeper revealing the inner turmoil and darker side of Elvis until he climaxes into an incredibly moving end.

I don't know if I'm the only one but that last scene at Prcillia's house and then in the limo with him crying was amazing...a wreching way to end. It really put a very sad spin on the movie that I can't help but to think was true to life.

Yes. Most people either pretend this movie was never made or give Midkiff bad reviews. Those people must not have really watched the movie.

As much as I like Kurt Russell his performance as Elvis was nowhere as good as Dale Midkiff. Dale got his mannerism down to the "t". Dick Clark produced the movie starring Kurt Russell but it only touched Elvis' life. It was made a short time after Elvis died. It was as did not want to tarnish Elvis' reputation. Elvis tarnished his own life. He took the drugs, was hot tempered, and unfaithful and much more. Yes he did alot of good for thousands, he was a great singer. I loved him but certainly not an angel.

Dale Midkiff was great as Elvis, truly incredible! You forgot he was acting at times, and that's a rare thing to happen in ANY film.
