Can anyone remember.......

If you were old enough in the 80s to remember how much hype there was about this movie......what was it like? Were there a lot of TV spots for it? Were a lot of people talking about it? Or better yet, did anyone go to see it in theaters?

I was actually fortunate enought to see Elvira Mistress of the Dark in Cache 8 Theatre. I was in 8th grade. My mother, sister, and I had already been hooked on Elvira's Movie Macabre and Thriller Video; once Elvira's feature film commercials started appearing, we knew we had to go. In retrospect, I can't believe it showed in our town. My understanding is that it had an extremely limited release. The fact that the theater was close to a military base may have had some influence on the film playing here. It was very well received. The theater was packed! Of course the tassle scene was the talk of everyone leaving the theater. I remember being the only student I knew who got to go. Our theater did not give out the Elvira Cook Book swag and they did not have the huge cardboard display (just the poster) but the theater was magical that day. Unfortunately the movie was gone before we could see it a second time. Yeah the 80's were like a trip to Halloween town. Elvira was in every grocery store and gas station, her huge movie boxes lined the shelves of video stores, and she was appearing on every other channel in commercials, hosting Movie Mac, featured in MTV specials, TBS schlockathons, and guest starring in all the popular shows (i.e The Fall Guy, CHiPs, Parker Lewis Can't Lose, 30 Something, Bloopers, etc...). Every dime store had her costume (though cheap and looked more like a traditional witch dress with a mullet like wig) but had her beautiful image on the front. Elvira make-up and neon hair spray, earrings, and bracelets dominated a huge section of the halloween aisle. Even the comic book stand at the local 7 Eleven had Elvira adorning their impulse counter. It was awesome to be a kid in the 80's. Especially if you were an Elvira fan! Many years later, I was fortunate to meet both Cassandra Peterson and Elvira in Massachusetts at the Super Megafest and twice more at Texas Frightmare Weekend. I must say she's still got it and I am even more crazy about her today! :)
