Why was Shoeless Joe staring at that candle ? I don't think he actually gave an explanation did he ?

He said that he stared at the flame until the eye went blind. Then he swiched. He said it sharpened his "batting eye." I don't know how that worked but I guess he did what he thought was best for himself.

Apparently the guy was kind of thick.

I guess that it helped him focus on a single object, like he would have to when a baseball was thrown toward him.
