D.B. Sweeney as Joe Jackson

When I 1st saw this movie in 1988 I had seen photos of Joe Jackson.
D.B. Sweeney looks nothing close to Joe Jackson but the movie had 2 actors in the movie that look like Joe Jackson in Chris Llyod and Richard Edson.
Anybody else not happy with Sweeny casting?

He was cast because of his baseball experience. The real Joe Jackson was in his 30's, prematurely aged, unattractive, and backward, but not stupid. In this movie he looks like a kid and dumber than a box of rocks.

Sweeney has never been that great of an actor. Even being previously cast with Charlie Sheen and James Caan in movies before this (which were huge flops), he's never had that much of a presence and now reduced to mostly a B-movie and TV guest star actor.

I think Chris Cooper would have been a better choice.

DB did a better job than Ray Liotta in Field Of Dreams.....and Chris Cooper had just started acting when this movie was being made, so he wouldn't have been cast

I'll second that. I really like Ray Liotta, but I thought he was miscast in FOD.

I don't know any baseball fans that wouldn't recognize Babe Ruth, The Mick, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Ted Williams, etc., but how many would recognize an uncaptioned picture of Shoeless Joe, despite his notoriety?

I'm a baseball fan but I don't have a clue what Joe Jackson looked like, so Sweeny's casting was fine with me.

Sweeney was in a movie where he was a hockey player and ended up being a figure skater -- only in the movies, right?
But he must be a pretty good athlete, and I hate movies where the person isn't physically convincing in the role of an athlete, so no -- I didn't mind.
