What A Beautiful Film!!! Like Rain Man, Only Better!

Guys,

This is one of the most touching and heart-wrenching movies that I have ever seen in my life! The bond that Dominique and Eugine share is so mesmerizing and so captivating, that you feel after the movie that you have entered the lives of two very special people. I cry SO HARD after seeing this movie every time!!! Keep the Kleenex box near. If this movie doesn't reduce you to tears, check to see if your heart is still there.

I had a very special friend who faced the same types of obstacles that Eugene faced in this movie. Like Eugene, he was a med student who was often torn between caring for his handicapped brother and continuing his education. I get emotional just reading about this movie because words can not describe how special it is.

It is flawless, timeless, and breathtakingly beautiful. Rain Man was excellent! However, Dominick and Eugene has a stronger more emotional impact.

Yes, better than Rain Man.

Very good acting in this one.

Rain Man never really knew his brother before the start of the movie though...that's about him both getting to know and coming to terms with his brother....will agree that this movie is waaay underrated when it comes to depictions of impaired people onscreen....this was released before rain man...and years before forrest gump or i am sam or any of those guys! Poor Tom Hulce...at least Amadeus is recognized as a classic....better then rain man though is a bit of an overstatement... however i will take ray liotta anyday over tom cruise

Seriously this is better than Rain Man? I gotta check this one out!

Whether one is better than the other is immaterial, they both are very good films. And what does being a parent of an autistic child have to do with anything, especially whether one film is better than the other? Ray was autistic,Dominick wasn't.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

Just saw this movie on the THIS digital TV network. Some small flaws, but I still liked it quite a bit. I agree the realtionship between the two men was wonderfully portrayed, quite touching.

That being said, I felt the movie did dip its toe into made-for-TV style melodrama just a bit. I had mixed feelings about the episode where Nicky tries to rescue the baby. For the most part, I felt it was courageous of the filmakers to go some place dramatically that I the viewer didn't predict. But I can see where some people would think it was a bit over the top.

Did the boy really have to die? Generally, I'm not the type of viewer who wants a movie to wimp out and shy away from tragedy and have everything all sunny-happy. But I think the key is to have just the right amount of tragedy, not too much and not too little. It seemed to me that if the boy had just gotten hurt badly enough to go to the emergency room, that would have been enough. But to have him die seemed liked overdoing it. The dog being hit by the car seemed unnecessary to me also.

I also found it a little strange that Eugene would go off on his own particularly after this epdisode. Yes, Nicky's actions were well intended. But if I were Eugene, I think it would leave me feeling that Nicky might be prone to other actions of a dangerous and unpredictable sort and therefore not ready to live life unsupervised.

So there was a credibility gap ot two, But I did find this to have much more emotional impact that Rain Man. No comparison between Liotta and Tom Cruise. By the end of Rain Man, Cruise's character was supposed to be transformed and now caring about his brother. But I didn't find Cruise's portrayal of those emotions convincing at all. He still seemed to me like the same self-absorbed annoying person he had been throughout the movie. (But then again, to expect otherwise would be to assume Tom Cruise can act!)

I agree. Who in the hell wants to watch child abuse? Espacially see the kid die? Whoever decided to create this whole thing should burn in hell. As for David Strathairn, you agreed to take on this role, so that says alot about your real life character. You are a rotten ass who hates kids. You are a scumbag and the people who created this should hate themselves for the rest of their lives!

***spoilers***

God what a moronic post. So all actors who aggree to play bad guys are bad guys in real life too?
The guy who played hitler in der untergang hates jews in real life etc
I doubt strathairn or his kids would aggree with your logic.
Second of all it's a DRAMA not a comedy, and these things happen in real life so why shouldn't they in the movies?

I could partly aggree with you if it was a drawn out torture scene with a boy which didn't add much to the story. But otherwise no.

As for "killing" the dog and the boy I guess it's all there so it can lead up to the ending with hulce doing something so drastic as kidnapping the baby and using a gun.

The death of the dog was a preparation for church-scene where he speaks to the priest. And the death of the boy was so he could kidnap the baby and also tell the truth about what had happened. (and come to peace with his own past)

If the boy only had gotten injured, he could've said himself what happened (if he dared), and also it would've been strange for hulce only kidnapping the baby and leaving the boy with the parents...

It's just a movie!! And no one was hurt IRL I'm sure :)

well since you're naked you might as well f___ a friend of mine. Paul come in here!

Good God. This has to be the most asinine post I've ever read on IMDB, and that's saying something.

David Straithairn plays a child abusing father who kills his own kid, so that MUST mean that he's a terrible man in real life. Does this mean that Anthony Hopkins is a cannibal serial killer, or that Michael Keaton walks around town dressed like a giant bat?

Perhaps somebody never explained the difference between reality and fiction to you?

reply

OMG on the David Straithairn comments. He is an ACTOR!!!!

That is the dumbest thing I have ever seen regarding actors, with the exception of Susan Lucci saying that when her character on All My Children(Erika Kane) went to Betty Ford, "fans" sent her flowers and well wishes to the Betty Ford Center to Erika Kane....LOL.

They couldn't distinguish fiction from reality.

This was an excellent film.

Stacy ..I hope you are being sarcastic or just plain kidding. This is a great movie about a tough subject. I saw the premier with producer and director and Tom Hulce. If David S had been there he would have been thanked also.

Apart from the fact that both films deal with a person's relationship with a mentally handicapped brother, Dominick and Eugene is so different from Rainman that it doesn't mean very much to compare them. Perhaps most importantly, Rainman isn't nearly as tragic as this film.

However, I will say that Ray Liotta is far more talented than Tom Cruise, it's unfortunate that he's been typecast in tough guy cop or gangster roles.'

It's equally unfortunate that Tom Hulce didn't have much of a career after Amadeus.

Like Sgt. Osiris said, "never go full retard". That's why this film worked.
