Which con man was you rooting for to win?

Steve Martin or Michael Caine?

I admit I was rooting for Steve Martin up until Janet said she was poor, then I was rooting for Michael Caine.

Then when the ending was revealed I felt a fool just like the characters by being suckered in and tricked

Brilliant comedy and one of the 80s finest

Baby, you make me wish i had three hands.

Lawrence. He had class, and he was slyer.

Lawrence, hands down. He was quite a conner!

Wonderful, but forgettable. It sounds like a film I've seen. I probably wrote it.

Steve Martin because he was more the underdog.

Lawrence.

He had class and only took women who were corruptible and could spare the money. Yes,he was still a con man but he had principal.

Definitely Lawrence. Can't defeat the king!

Yes Lawrence for me too. For the reasons you expressed. I watched it again today! I also like how he genuinely took to Janet and didn't hesitate to refund the $50,000 that she claimed Freddie had stolen.

The women he took from probably got most of those jewels and cash etc from their rich husbands so they were just as greedy!

Neither, for most of the movie. Or both, rather. But then when Janet said she was poor, I started rooting for Lawrence because he seemed to have some kind of scruples about that, wanting to stop the game because it wasn't worth ruining a person's life; it's one thing to scam the rich, but another to scam the poor. And then I started rooting even more for Lawrence and against Freddy when Freddy was ready to take advantage of Janet and have sex with her.

But then the twist happened and completely blew me over. I didn't see it coming at all. When they figured out Janet's scam at the airport, I loved it so much I actually applauded.  It was just the perfect ending, in my opinion.

I think it's the sort of movie where you don't have to root for anyone really, because they're all "dirty rotten scoundrels", and they're just conning each other. You just enjoy the game. The fact that it was Janet who ultimately conned the both of them and won the game just made it perfect. I love how they all teamed up in the end too, a surprise ending even after the twist. Great and hilarious ending to a great and hilarious movie.

The people, and the people alone, are the motive force in the making of history.

Lawrence, definitely, because while a crook among crooks he had a class about him that Freddie couldn't touch even if he wanted to. Freddie was strictly small-time and content to remain so instead of taking notes when a master (well, at least an advanced student) was trying to school him on the finer points of being a gentleman swindler. Never ignore knowledge when it's being offered and the only cost is some time.
