French Song in Disco

Anyone know the name of that french song that michael caine is dancing to in the disco?

reply

You know, I came to this page to check the soundtrack listing for the very same song! If I have any luck, I'll post the name.

"Congratulations, you're going to go down in history as the man who killed Superman."

reply

The name of the song we think is "Celui Qui S'en Va" the album is "En Plein Coeur" by Marie Myriam 1988 if anyone has a copy please let me know, hope this helps.
AS always my friend and yours Chris

reply

See Message Board the answer and details are there Chris

reply

I've listened to a sample of "Celui Qui S'en Va" and it doesn't sound anything like the disco song. I'm 90% sure that this song is played somewhere else in the film. So the search goes on...

"Congratulations, you're going to go down in history as the man who killed Superman."

reply

Yeah Celui Qui S'en Va is the song right after the disco song when they begin slow dancing. Does anyone know the lowsy disco song???

reply

I speak fluent French so I tried listening but I couldn't make out the words...even when I watched the scene in french and/or with french subtitles but I could get no hint of the words or name of the song. I'll keep looking.

By the way I just noticed that on the French language version of the film, they change the scene at the end where there's the big tour group. In the French version the woman says "Here is Mr Argentina, Chips O'Toole". They change the whole thing so he is from Argentina now not Australia, and when Lawrence goes along with it, he says "Buenos Dias" instead of "G'day" and he says something else instead of "shrimps on the barbie". I think that's because it's extemely difficult to speak french with an Australian accent, so they changed it to Argentinian. Wierd huh? On the German one it's Australia though... So's the Italian one... And the Spanish one... Strange.

Note: Only the languages this affects, If you use the subtitles they only follow the English version.

reply

I cant believe that no one can find this extremely funny song! I checked on Limewire pro and cant find it either. The elui Qui S'en Va song is definately not it. That song sux.

I also speak French but nothing. Not even on Google. Doesnt it say at the end of the movie??

18 April 2006:
And I have returned after almost a year of searching!! By sheer luck as well!! My brother is a DJ and even he cant find this song. Its such a funny one as well. What I might do now, is just record it from the DVD and remove the spoken words. Then loop what there is. Or, I'll pester my bro to do it! If it works, I will post again and send you guys what I have.

I speak French and I will contact some parisinne and belgian radio stations.

Lol, wathcing it again.. Its too funny!

reply

No It's not in the credits. Can't find it anywhere

reply

I've had a look and can't find the name of the song anywhere. Anyone had any luck yet?

reply

I've been looking for that song, too, without any luck. My brother had a music store owner search his database of songs. Marie Myriam was there but not a song by that title. I just watched the movie again - what a great song!

reply

lets get this topic up and running again - so is their anyone that know or has found the name of the artist and song which play during the movie when the M.CAINE, S.MARTIN and the jackel are playing tennis, horse back riding, and dancing briefly in the disco. its that disco song that seems to be extinct???

reply

I wanna know what that song is...somebody must know! I even bought the Marie Myriam album from Ebay thinking it would be on there. It definitely isnt that celui qui s'en va. Somebody must have some idea. I cant believe the producers/directors orchestrated the song just for the film.

reply

LOL...I came to this page, cause I thought someone had the answer to this question. One thing is for sure, the song is not part of the soundtrack list at the end of the film.

reply

Someone must know the songs in this film? There are 2 I can remember that are so catchy and good? I came to this film to find out the songs myself!!

reply

Dry land is not a myth, I've seen it!

Er, no I have nothing!

"Congratulations, you're going to go down in history as the man who killed Superman."

reply

May need to pen an email off to someone in authority - maybe one of the musical directors of the film? Any other suggestions?

Call me crazy as a fox, but I believe you.

I've done the requisite search on the file sharing networks and come up with nothing. So, I guess what we're all asking our fine selves, is how do we acquire this song?

Anyone who manages to get a digital file of this song, please post for download someplace and let the people have their cake....

Hey, I'm another fan of that song. Could you please try to convert your copy for us unfortunate? =)

(http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,117810,pg,2,00.asp other softwares)

but dont bother reading about his buy, don't want you to buy something for $20-40 and never use it again. :D

read the comments, something about this freeware program: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/?lang=en

and the comment stating "you don't even really need the gizmo. You can just hook up a connector that has RCA cables on one end and a 1/8 connector on the other (RCA to component, 1/8 in to soundcard) and use the creative wav studio. although i use Audacity, which is a freeware recording program (includes a mixer, and effects)."

I'm no sound wiz, so I can't really say if this is something that could work...but please atleast look into it, no pressure. ;)

Ray: I think we better split up.
Egon: Good idea.
Peter: Yeah, we could do more damage that way.

reply

Brill! Congrats! Now, just gotta get my hands on a copy from somewhere!

reply

I almost got kicked from a file sharing site for making a request so I'm out of luck there. I've been trying to buy it from Amazon but I can't find it.

If anyone has capability of digitizing vinyl we need you!!!

Any other ideas?

"Congratulations, you're going to go down in history as the man who killed Superman."

reply

Maybe an online French site like Amazon? We have the name so we're halfway there finally.

reply

Have located following website/radio station (french)
www.bide-et-musique.com/artist/ They state they sometimes play her songs, may be a possibility of recording from their radio station. Will try but cannot do the 24/7 thing. Will let you know...

I previously contacted the music editor Nancy Forgarty from DRS, Unfortunately she died last year.

reply

I looked at the radio station site but as I don't speak French I can't be much help. Perhaps if someone speaks French, they could email the site requesting the song? (Maybe at a specific time so that someone can record it?)

I looked all over (the French) Amazon (very good idea) but I couldn't find the song. I did find the artist but though. I listened to a few samples of songs with similar names but turned up nothing!

And still the search goes on...

"Congratulations, you're going to go down in history as the man who killed Superman."

reply

If anyone can write down what to say in French I'll mail them and record it when they say they'll play it. Spent 3 hours the other night listening to waffle!

reply

Okay, I have a French friend. I will get her to write a message and I'll post it here. Perhaps several of us can send the message and maybe they will respond.

I'll get back to you...

reply

To send to the radio station.....

In English:

Hello,

A small group of people (see http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095031/board/nest/15069157) have been trying to locate an obscure French song called "Histoire d'amour à Roma", written by Didier Barbelivien and performed by Caroline Verdi. As we understand it the song is very rare and only available on vinyl.

On our search for the song, we came across your website/radio station, www.bide-et-musique.com/artist which states that it sometimes plays her songs.

Please could you play this song for us? (Please could you advise me, by return email, when you will play the song so that I can be sure to listen?)

If there is a possibility of getting a copy of the song, digital or otherwise, I would be happy to pay a reasonable price for any cost you may incur.

I am English speaking, so if you are able to help in anyway, please give me time for my friend to translate your reply.

Thank you,

I'm going to send it tomorrow, but if a fre people want to send the message from their own email address, maybe we have a chance.

Ok, I just sent an email to the site listed that bide thing and also to these guys here:

they list all her songs, some with clips, but OF COURSE not the one we need..typical

reply

Perhaps a long shot but has anyone thought of writing to Didier Barbelivien or Caroline Verdi. Maybe the only option left!

reply

[deleted]

Ok, so I sent an email to the owner of the link I posted before. He replied saying that he has made this site on Caroline Verdi but has no connections with Bide or anyone else. He has however, passed the information onto them.

I also asked him if he has a copy of that song, so I will wait for what he says.
Fingers crossed..

"It's a song called "Histoire d'amour à Roma", written by Didier Barbelivien (a very famous french singer-songwriter from the 80's) and performed by Caroline Verdi. I have the record (an old vinyle) if you're interested... " By jbranchet

THIS IS THE WRONG SONG.... this imformation is incorrect.... how do i know this you ask??? .... because i have that record in front of me.... i have had it shiped from france at great expense to find out its not the right song.... what is most disapointing is the fact the song is not even close... apart from the fact it is sung in french and by a female.

We are at square one again. :(

sorry guys, any other ideas???

reply

Oh my god!!!!

That sux... I saw it was sold on eBay.. Was that you?? Hahaha
Sorry about the expense..

No idea on what to do. I did record it onto my phone and use it as a ringtone. I get the voices as well. Very amusing!!

reply

How the hec did this happen? I cant believe it. Was the record you bought even featured on the film or sound anything like another song featured on the film. Have we been hoaxed? This is bad news - thought we were on the trail for a moment there.

reply

no this song is not anywhere on the film.... the song is not really anything like the movie. i would say that it was a silly idea to purchase when knowing the song was produced in the early 80's to be then used in a disco in a late 80's movie.

the song might just not be availble. may never had been pubished and just made for the movie as a "once off".

reply

Yeah, that was my guess too as unfortunate as it is. Wonder if there were any other music arrangers listed in the credits that we may able to approach.

reply

WOW Ive been wondering this since 1988 , does anybody in this world know this song??? plzzzz help lol.

reply

Please write to [email protected] if you find this french song. I am crazy about it and it is driving me crazy. That I cannot locate it.
Sincerly!

reply

Or maybe just post on here!? I think we've exhausted all searches though unless anyone has any other ideas. Looks like there's probably just a handful of people who may know what the song is - and they're either dead or don't visit IMDB. Im still convinced somebody on the making of the movie may be able to help.

reply

maybe a really good french dj that knows all songs produced within the french 80's disco period could help.

you know, i bet some french dude is playing this song on his cd player in his renault, dancing to it while driving and not having a care in the world because he has this fantastic "european" song.

p.s does anyone have a plan to get this song, and how can we get together to help???

reply

I see that someone "who speaks fluent" French tried to listen to it for the lyrics but had no luck.

Is it worth me getting my French-born friend to listen to it? I don't think she'd know the song but maybe she could understand some of the lyrics.

Also, if anyone could rip the sound byte from the DVD and post a link to it maybe we could start emailing the clip to people to see if it's recognised. (I have a website I could post it on and we can then just start sending the link to people).

All we need someone to post the click temporarily somewhere so I can acquire it and then post on a permanent basis.

"Congratulations, you're going to go down in history as the man who killed Superman.

reply

ok this sounds like a good idea.... where do you want me to send the sound clip? email would be best i suppose... PM me

reply

I still think we should possibly write to everyone involved in the making of the film (pity the music co-ordinators appear to be dead) and ask them. Not sure how we'd get their addresses though!

reply

[deleted]

I'm with you guys but i have no idea what to do either

reply

I bet michael caine and steve martin would find all this quite amusing lol! I wonder how hard it would be to contact them?? And tell them their is this biggish campaign to find this song!! I met steve martin once in top man shop I think it was in Bond street, I was a security guard and got his autograph as he is one of my alltime gtreats along with gene wilder and martin short and eric idle. I have more but had to add those names as there legends! Anyway steve martin seemed really nice so maybe he would have the contacts to help us??

reply

Yeah, we would just need to email/post him this thread. Anyone happen to have Steve's address! Or, at the very least, his agents!?

Hi,

I don't like the way new posts are being displayed so I'm going to start a new topic, but please check it as I have some information!

"Congratulations, you're going to go down in history as the man who killed Superman."

reply

this guy has got the right idea!! good stuff, we need to focus.

some more ideas are needed, we can also improve on this start.... i think we need to add some still photos of the scene in question where this mystery song plays.... communication is visual.. if people see the pic's, they will remember the movie and remember that scene (which is etched in my memory but maybe not with other people)

also a french translation of your wording... a french link to the answer we want is very possible and if they dont know english all that well... it cuts the percentages down when dealing with what i think is an "100% french song".

does anyone else have any ideas, im wondering if some has experince in making that website more visable to the world. how can we start getting more
"hits" and increase our chances of success. im convinced "the truth is out there"

otherwise this is an excellent start, lets keep the ball rolling guys.

reply

And I am back. Actually completely forgot about this..

My best friend is a director in L.A. and I will ask him to give me Steve Martin's agents tel number.

Hope it works.

reply

Hey, I am the one who originally posted this question. Great to see such a great response for this post.

Just wanted to say to 'coolhandphil', the sample of the song on your site is not the one im looking for, its the song played right after that one.

Its the slow song when michael caine kisses the girl on the dance floor.

reply

I've been reading these posts and found myself amazed at how long the search for this mysterious song lasted. I works in films, mainly in editing, so I'm familiar with the way things work in the biz.

I do have one interesting lead: This French disco song may not actually exist because it could be a rip-off of another 80's song that sound extremely similar. The original song is called "Lost in Emotion" sang by Lisa Lisa, which was released in 1987. My best bet is that the composer took the original song music and re-created it for the soundtrack--a tactic not unusual in show business. They do that to avoid having to pay the artist any fees for using their music. Now, this may not be the EXACT song but if you listen to both of them, you'll hear the similarities.

Hope I was able to help you guys.

reply

This is crazy...im looking for the song too

reply

Im going to enjoy the song so much once we finally get it!!

reply

I've always had great succees in downloading songs knowing only a few words of the lyrics and checking for the words of the lyrics in google and then finding the name of the song.

However, since I don't speak french I'm having great trouble isolating the words of the song.

If someone could decipher a sentence or even a few words of the lyrics and search in google with " (song words)+ lyrics," I'm sure we'd succeed!

reply

dude...

dont you think we have all thought of this????

reply

To be fair though, and maybe Ive missed it, nobody has actually transcripted any of the words here. Has anyone managed to make out any of the words in the song? My French is not bad but I just can't make out any of the lyrics.

reply

i'm a huge fan of this song and listened to it so many times on repeat during the movie i looked all over as all of you have as well. Since i (we) have had NO luck, i decided to redo or imitate this song. I have a recording studio like room, and will work on reproducing this song. I have nailed the chorus of it and the main theme part, so give me a month (i'm in school) to get it finished and i will leave a link for you to download if you like. chances are you wont be seeing any difference in the songs and it will be enjoyed almost as much as original

reply

Well, that would be absolutely excellent! I suppose it will be the next best thing! Go for it!

reply

Ha ha ha ha love this thread!

Hi all, now you got me started aswell! I've also loved this song from the first time I heard it. When listening to the clip on the blog page I've been able to find/clear out some of the lyrics at least:

Oh la la la
Je suis la prima donna
Oh la la la
?????
C'est la meme chose toutes les temps
....

I've tried to google on the lyric bits but found nothing relevant. I will keep on looking aswell, we have to find out which song this is.

Best regards
Jonas

Excellent, great start! How did you find the email? I have sent him the following email:

"Dear Joel,

I understand you were the music recordist on the film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. A large fan base of the film are hoping you may be able to help. We have recently been holding discussions on the name of a song used in the film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and your name came forward as a person who may be able to help.

It is a French song (quite fast and eurobeat) used whilst Michael Caine is dancing in the disco as Steve Martin sits watching from the wheelchair. It is used just prior to the song Celui Qui S'en Va by Marie Myriam. Do you happen to know the name and artist of this song and, perhaps even where we may obtain a copy?

If you do, you would make a lot of people extremely happy. I understand you are probably a very busy person, but your help would be so much appreciated!

Thankyou very much for your time,

My name"

reply

yup well written.
Could have put the link to this thread so he can see what a nightmare we are going through to get 1 non-existant song!!

Dom

reply

No, its cool, I added that too as an afterthought though dont know whether he'll take the trouble to sign up to IMDB. It does seem odd that nobody who worked on the film seems to come on these boards and help us...I mean, I know if I had worked on the film, I'm sure I would check this out! Oh well.

reply

Well, suprise suprise, he didnt email back. Any other updates on this quest?

reply

Hi All,
Am slowly going through list, Alan Splet also dead. Can anyone here contact the óther side´ may help?

Have e-mailed a few others in the production list, will let you know.

Most depressing thread ever.

And I know the feeling, as Im exactly the same way! Good luck everybody!

reply

Dare I say this a dead loss. I dont think the song was ever released and nobody seems to have any clues. Sad, but maybe true.

reply

oh man.. this is terrible.. I know one other guy in L.A. who is a director. I will call him this evening and see if he can help, otherwise.. i think there is no happy ending to this!

reply

[deleted]

The music editor would have known this, and might be the only person that might recall it. Too bad she's dead.

reply

There might be a happy ending after all. I have track down the record and it just arrived today in the mail.

reply

Are you serious? Who sang it? Whats the record called? Goodness. Can it be true!? It's not that awful Celui qui S'en Va by Myriam is it?

reply

From what I remember there are two songs played during the disco scene. I have the second song, yes its that awful Celui qui S'en. I take it you are looking for the first song. sorry.........

reply

Its OK, many of us have made that mistake...I guess the search goes on!.....

reply

Has anyone made anymore progress? I've been searching like mad to find this song, too!! Please, let's not give up!

reply

We might get some more new viewers loggin on as its on tonight as im writing this! Although I have to tape it as my mum refuses to watch it for the 4th time or wateva it is lol!

reply

my brother is a DJ, i have asked him to convert it from DVD to mp3, just the song of course, it will have the voices in it but i can ask him to loop it a couple of times as well. i think its the closest we will get to it

reply

Yes! We have to get this song somehow! And the Slow song!!

reply

I have the slow song on casette-tape. Its celui qui s'en va by Marie Myriam. Its the faster song we are after!

reply

Nope its definatly not that song. There is some guy in that slow song and who is he?

reply

Folks, I studied the thread and couldn't even get a clue: the guy who was a topicstarter DID mean the slow song (2nd song - Caine kisses the girl and english sailors suggest sending him away on aircraft). It's the song I've beeen looking for.
Then I realised that some of you guys are looking for a disco theme (1st song)...
Am i so stupid or you have really been searching for two differrent songs?

What's the point:
I've found a CD at e-bay which has "Celui qui..." performed by Marie Myriam in the tracklist. It's rather expensive so it would be silly to spend money for nothing. Could you please kindly tell to a lil' poor slowcoach whether this song (the '2nd song' aka 'the slow song') is what i am looking for or not? I mean is it Marie Myriam or not? - and, yes, I really admire 'this awful' song)))
My concerns (why asking): i've dowloaded 2 'non-Myriam' variants of "Celui qui..." - by Damia and by Patrick Bruel. Its NOTHING like the one in DRS! And remember - there was also a 'backstage voice' of a guy in that song (the 2nd song)

P.S. Please!! If anyone has already obtained the slow song aka the 2nd song could you contact me via email '[email protected]'. Any offers to be considered)))
Thanks in advance.

reply

OK, lets get this straight. This thread was orginally started to find the first song playing at the disco (the faster, poppy, eurobeat song). We still do not know the answer to this (Unfortunately!)

The second song (the one that plays immediately after the one described above) is Marie Myriams Celui Qui S'en va. I have her album on cassette with that song and can defintiely say for certain that is it.

However, just to re-iterate, despite the confusion, this thread is people looking for the faster track prior to the Myriam song.

reply

yup, we are still searching for the first song. It starts when they get to the tennis court and Steve gets the ball to the head, which in itself is hilarious, but his expression is the best!

I will mail IMDB maybe they can help us out..

reply

dang.. lol I came here thinking someone knew the song.. guess not lol. Oh well, I guess I can move on with my life without owning the song =)

reply

maybe someone who speaks french can transcribe the lyrics, then we can google it..

the scene:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMVeQAcuJa8

reply

Someone, anyone!?!?! Surely someone who worked on the film can give us a clue - we know you must read these boards!!!

reply

i spk french, but cant understand the words...

reply

I work in film editing and I know a lot about the nature of soundtrack music in the biz.

Strangely, this French disco song intrigues me and I was looking for it myself. I'm a good researcher and even I couldn't find it.

I do have one good lead though. Sometimes film composers have the knack to rip-off other artist's beat for their own musical scores. This sound shady but it's actually a common practice in show business. They do this to avoid having to deal with royalty, fees, and contractual issues with the original music artist.

This peculiar song--the French disco song we're all obsessed with-- has some very strange similarities to another 80's song that was fairly popular in the U.S. It may not be the EXACT same song but if you listen to both of them, you'll know what I'm talking about. This song is called "Lost in Emotion" written by Lisa Lisa. It was released in 1987--not long before Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was released.

Anyway, hope that song make a decent substitute. Take care.

reply

Years and years have gone by since this search began; and we are no closer. My hunch right from the start (and I was one of the original contributers to the thread) is that it was specially mixed for the film...and what you see is what you get. IMDbPro.com (is anyone a member of that) has contact details for the producers and directors of the movie...anyone fancy sending off some emails to them...surely they must know what the music is...I realise many have done this already but may be worth a try.

Ottherwise, It looks like the secret has gone to the grave with the music producers of this film. WHat happened to the guy earlier in this thread that said he could remove the words, remix the song and have it out there "as good as new!"...that seems to be the only option now.

reply

hi guys

I join this thread, because I am very interested in this song.

I will colaborate investigating.

two things:
- Is not "Celui qui se'n va"
- Is not "Histoire d'amour a roma"

I think we should contact to Producer of movie...

Regards

reply

Thanks for your help with the ongoing quest! Do you know where we can get details of how to contact the producer or director? Are they even still alive?...our idea about contacting the musical arranger for the film was halted when we realised they had died.

reply

Hi guys!

How the search is going on???

By my side, no news yet.

I have written an email to web of Michael Caine, asking for it. No answer by the moment.

By the way, I think it should be good try contact to her daughter. She appears on this scene... so... surely she could give us any information.

I think Natasha Caine is her name.

Regards

Nicely done except thats not the song that this thread is refrring to. Thats the song immediately *after* it and is called Celui qui S'en Va by Marie Myriam. Its the one prior to that that we need!

reply

oops! Sorry. I was looking for that song, not the other. Thanks.

I don't have the name of the song in question, but I do have some insight that may alleviate a few tensions:

A few months ago I was watching an episode of "Smallville" (don't make fun) and this great disco song played in the background of a scene. For over a week everyone who saw that episode and posted on IMDB among other forums tried in vain to find out the name of the song to no avail. It turned out that it wasn't an actual song, but rather something specifically composed and contrived by the in-house music department at Telepictures which is owned by Warner Bros. which produces "Smallville." When we finally downloaded the song, it was less than two minutes long, not a real song, and only repeated the same lyrics over and over. Turns out it was cheaper for the in-house dept. to compose their own stuff rather than pay out an actual artist for their material.

My point?

The same thing occurred in DRS. When you go to this link and listen to the music at 2 minutes 35 seconds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5BXjBY43bE
you will realize that there are not any lyrics to the music in question, and that it was probably composed either by Miles Goodman (the original composer for DRS) or someone else on the music team. However, that piece of music was never an actual song released for the radio. Furthermore, the full length of that music is probably all that you hear in the movie. It starts on the tennis court and ends before that other slow French song in the disco. That's it. That's the entirety of the music. There is no more. I suggest you record that piece off the movie and copy and paste it until you have a couple minutes worth.

Not sure if this makes any sense, but I'm certain I'm right. Sorry if it's not the answer you were looking for, but at least you can stop looking.

Do not grieve....soon I shall be one with the Matrix.

Thanks for the reply. My gut instinct is that you're right.

It sounds like the (few) vocal parts in the song were 'mixed down' for the scene... I can definitely hear some words, the woman sings 'prima donna'

Your theory makes a lot of sense though

It's nice to know I'm not alone in searching for this song! Maybe one day the mystery will be solved.

First of all, thanks a lot for your help...but..
... I'm not sure you will be right..

Keep in mind, that link you mentioned (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5BXjBY43bE) curiously and strangely no sounds any vocal during the song...

In the real movie you can hear some words " prima donna" , "lentement", "c'est la meme chose tout le temps" and so on...

I don't think so that the duration of film will be only this piece. The jump from french disco song to the other one (slow song) IS NOT NATURAL, is a little forced (please, pay attention..)

For me, the mistery keeps on going ;-)
