What if McClane didn't get on that plane to L.A.?

This is silly, I know, and nothing more than idle thoughts, but it occurred to me just how different Christmas would've been that year for John McClane had he not flown out to the coast. Sure, he ended up with foot trauma and a gunshot wound, but he also rekindled things with the Missus and got to see his kids.

But if he wasn't there, and Hans' plan had gone off without a hitch, Holly would be dead, the kids would be alone, and he'd still have to go out there and clean up the mess. That'd be about the worst news you could wake up to on Christmas.

Hans would be sitting on a beach earning 20 percent.

Ironically, his life would have probably been better, in the long-run. It never works out between him and Holly, and I get the impression that she has turned the kids against him, since his relationship with the kids is strained until he "makes things right" with them in 4 and 5.

Holly would have died at Nakatomi, and since they were still technically married, John would have taken custody of the kids and taken them to New York, and probably had a better relationship with them. Maybe then he wouldn't drink and smoke so much, and probably would have hooked up with another chick!

I like your story line best.

Even if they were divorced he likely would have gotten the kids. He's still their father. Unless there was something on record implying he was an unfit father the courts would have given him custody.

Holly probably had a pretty awesome life insurance policy and I assume the kids would have moved in with John back in NYC. Her beneficiaries were probably her kids unless she still had a soft spot for John when she had it written up. John Jr. probably would have grown up idolizing his Dad. Might have been a win/win for John (outside of losing Holly which apparently never panned out).

Conquer your fear, and I promise you, you will conquer death.
