Alternate Title 'Megadeth Saves Heavy Metal'

Assume I had been living in a cave in the eighties and nineties, and all I knew about the metal scene came from watching this movie. I would have to conclude that Megadeth are the heros of the film and thanks to them, rock has survived.

For the first hour of the film you just have sex, drugs, and rock and roll, and the rock is not all that great. Sure, you have interviews with Aerosmith, Motorhead, Ozzy, and half of Kiss, but most of the music is not them, but low-budget imitators. The sexual hedonism just keeps getting worse and worse, and the bands get more and more into the alcohol and drugs, culminating in Chris Holmes of Wasp almost drowning himself in the pool, after drowning himself in a bottle of Vodka. Chris Holmes represents the depths to which the genre had sunk

Just when it looks like the whole metal scene is going to drown in a pool of self-loathing, self-abusing, morally depraved filth, here comes Megadeth! Dave Mustaine said earlier that he was not about to engage in bragging about the size of his manhood, or his sexual escapades. He said that talk is for losers! He says not to expect to get much success in the Heavy Metal scene. That's a good message for the kids, Dave!

When Dave Ellefson of Megadeth is interviewed, he does not have time to relax in bed with a couple of hot, choice groupies, like Paul Stanley of Kiss. He does his interview while he's on the go. No time to lose! Rock and roll is in trouble, and Megadeth has to go save it!

Next, you see Megadeth in the studio recording "In My Darkest Hour" a title symbolic of the state of metal at the time the film came out. The movie closes with a live performance of Megadeth. The fans are going crazy! Megadeth has done it! They have saved metal!

I know it sounds cheesy, but it is still a better story that "Kiss Meet the Phantom".

I admit it. I am a huge Megadeth fan. In my book, Deth can do no wrong, (except Risk. What the hell was that?)

But even I can not give them the squeeky-clean hero status they get in "Decline". Dave Mustaine created Megadeth, after he was kicked out of Metalica for spending too much time fu**ed up, and he would have to be gayer than Rob Halford, if he did not nail his share of groupies.

Good movie, but not as enjoyable Spinal Tap.

I'm assuming that Chuck Behler is whom you're referring to as Dave Ellefson. He is the person who is interviewed "on-the-go." The reason Chuck Behler was in the band at that time is the same reason that Jeff Young was: Chris Poland and Gar Samuelson, the original guitarist and drummer, were fired due to substance abuse.

The thing that's ironic is that Mustaine wrote a song about Poland ("Liar"), which basically comes out and calls him a druggie, alchoholic, etc. when Mustaine had his own drug/alchohol problems going on.

Also, I'm sure that the whole band was nailing their fair share of chicks (At least I'd like to think so!)

I fully agree with that statement. Waiting on United Abominations...

i don't know much about metal, not really in my personal tastes, but i agree. throughout this whole movie it was same old same old sex drugs blah blah blah what's new. the guys from megadeth were the only ones that had an original perspective and intelligent things to say.

They did save the one big-hair guy who answered "What do you want to be when you grow up?" with "happy" and stuck him in here sandwiched in between two Dave Mustaine clips. Cream rises to the top.

Huskie Jon,

Your post was brilliant, I nearly fell out of my chair laughing. ^_^\m/

Well when I first saw the movie (last year) I admit I didn't know that much about Megadeth, other than they were Dave Mustaine's band. But was far as music goes, I had no clue. So after 2 hours of watching Poison behave like horny teenage kids in front of the camera, I thought Megadeth was the sh!t. So i have been listening to some of their old records, read some things about Mustaine's background, and for some reason I cannot really believe everything he says. The woman that shot this documentary is a Megadeth fan, thats a fact. So maybe she went asked Dave to be part of it, as a way of ending it in good spirits. I mean why not Metallica? How about Guns N Roses? (Im a big fan) Don't get me wrong I really enjoy what they say in the end, about playing technical music and not getting high, so not cheat the fans, but wasn't Dave doing all kinds of stuff back in the day? Anyway, just a though.

The ironic thing is that the lineup of Megadeth featured in this movie (Dave Mustaine, Dave Ellefson, Jeff Young, and Chuck Behler) come off as the most lucid and "together" band in the entire movie, yet shortly after the film came out, Young and Behler were both out of Megadeth and the band's future was in jeopardy due to ... MASSIVE DRUG AND ALCOHOL USE!! Fortunately, Dave revamped the lineup and came back in 1990 with the RUST IN PEACE album, which is his all time masterpiece...
Only 11 more days till UNITED ABOMINATIONS!! \m/

hey metalgeek, are you expecting a lot out of this new album? I for some reason don't think it is going to be a great hit anyway. And whats up with this born again christian stuff ? Or voting for W in 2004 ? I am telling you, this guy has lost it :P

Hey, Jackfrusciante80:

I've heard a couple of tracks from the new Deth that have leaked onto the Net ("Gears of War" and "Washington Is Next") and they sound pretty damn good to me. I don't know what to think about Dave being a born-again or a Republican, but y'know what, even BEFORE he supposedly "cleaned up his act," he was a little on the weird side, so as long as his current mind-set inspires him to make some good pissed-off Megadeth music again, I honestly could care less who he votes for or whether he worships God, Satan, Captain Kirk, or the Teletubbies. :)

So in other words, yea, I guess I am expecting a lot of the new Deth album... I doubt it's going to launch Megadeth back to the top of the world again but I'm fairly sure that their diehard following will be happy with it.

metalgeek,

I wish no less for Megadeth, i really do wish there was a band who could do some kickass metal music again, since the new ones nowdays suck. But i admit, it's such a turn off that someone like him would turn born again and vote for W, in other words he's lost it by now :) Let me know how you like the new album.

Hey JackFrusciante80:
Just got the new Megadeth CD day before yesterday, I haven't listened to it all the way thru yet but what little I have heard sounds DAMMMMN good!! :) \m/ Dave Mustaine is BACK!!

Hey man, thats cool that you got it and like it so far. Honestly I am going to stay away from it, because I don't want to hear the beliefs of a born again, bush lover. being in the military for 7 years was enough :P hey what was that thing with Jack Bauer? i read something in the cd booklet ?

Did you know a lot of self professed leftists, liberals, other types of people who would never have defined themselves as patriots or flag wavers, did a total 180 after 9/11? Maybe Mustaine was one of them, ala Dennis Miller. I'm one of them--I was a left wing nihilist until those islamic bastards showed up on 9/11 and killed 3,000 of my fellow Americans (and others from over 50 nations who worked in the WTC). After that, I voted for a republican in 2004 for the first time in my life, George W. Bush; I will never support a liberal again. It happens.

reply

Well hey, we live in a free country , to each its own you know. BUt if you couldn't see clearly after 9/11 or 2 years after that, it is year 2007, no excuse anymore. Seriously, not saying liberals are better, but the other side is much worse.

Man, I didn't know the drugs had driven him to Xianity and the Republican party. What a freakin bummer.

I, too, am astounded when we lose someone like this to the Dark Side. It reminds you that your perception of someone can be based on assumptions that are not true. He seemed so rational, but now has aligned himself with "all that is soulless and wrong".

Looking forward to the new Behind The Music tonight, wondering if they'll mention any of this in the update.

left/right is nothing more than Hegelian nonsense. Dave said stuff about "foreigners" driving down wages and slamming Hispanics.........back in 1988 during his left-hegelian days. So did a lot of unionists and gentile leftists. A "leftist" can't exist without the Christ Myth. Leftism was born with Paul, Peter and James the Just(which then influenced the gospel writers along with old texts).

Politics change, so will Dave again. The post "9-11" right hegelian line is frankly getting old. Their fiscal contraction is failing and the Knights of Malta(which Ted Nugent, a well known right-hegelian is part of) are getting a bit nervous based on the pope selection.

The Dialect Dave uses now, bores me. But, I would write Metal songs giving thumbs up to Emperor Julian. I reject hegelian dialect.

Totally true man. I particularly enjoyed/cringed at the singer from Odin in the hot tub talking about how huge he deserved to be while some deluded bimbo was all over him. A more Tap moment i think it would be hard to find.

Great film and what a contrast in lifestyle from the other 2 decline films.
