Am I the only one into both Grunge/Alt Rock + Hair Metal?

I know a lot of people knock this film for focusing on hair bands but I like hair metal, I must confess. I like both alternative metal and hair metal (also thrash, progressive, power metal)

Some examples:

Hair metal: Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, Cinderella, Great White, Guns N' Roses, Ratt, Skid Row, Dokken, Twisted Sister... maybe a few others

Alternative Metal/Grunge: Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Faith No More, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, The Melvins

It seems like you can't like one and not hate the other. Why is that?

People are tribal? Or don't want to admit to their guilty pleasures?

Btw, there's a clip somewhere on youtube where they ask heavy metal band members their guilty pleasures music wise. Hilarious and surprising. Some admitted to liking Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, Abba (!).

I agree with you! Although I don't like most of the second wave of glam metal like Poison or Europe, or some grunge bands like Nirvana or Pearl Jam i still think you're right. And all these are metal bands not like dumb nu metal band nowadays!

Didn't Skid Row and GNR tour with Soundgarden?

reply

Axl Rose was a Nirvana fan (even asked them to tour with them) but Cobain wasn't a fan of Axl Rose which caused Axl to turn all prissy (hurt feelings and all). And Rose did like Soundgarden (don't know how the rest of the Gunners felt) but Izzy, Duff, and Axl did say they admired Nirvana.

I think that when people limit the kinds of music that they can listen to they're really cheating themselves. I love the grunge stuff and the metal stuff. when I was a kid I was very resistant to different types of music, my dad is a big beatles and stones guy and I hated them only because they didn't fit "my style". my older brother was a metal guy so I was taught that punk sucked. when I got a little older and didn't care so much about outward appearances, I found alot of great music that I was missing.

by the way, now I'm gonna have to dig up some melvins. they were awesome. what about mudhoney? they were a really cool band at that time.

personally i can't stand either genres but i still really enjoyed the movie. i think i liked the portrayal and film style of the movie. as far as actually being a metal fan myself, i must confess i'm not into the genre, but i do like some alt rock ... though not really the bands that have been listed.

reply

Yeah, I agree with you.

I have all those groups with the exception of the Melvins(never heard of them but I'll have to check them out)in my CD collection and on my MP3 player.I also have Neil Young,The Beatles,Rolling Stones along with Hank Williams JR., Alabama, Waylon Jennings and more. It's pretty interesting when it's on random play and Metallica is followed up by Johnny Cash...
