why are they speaking English?

This movie is set in Montreal, so why are they speaking English? The most people in Montreal and the rest of Québec speaks French, the English speaking minority in Québec is very small. Yes i know that English is more appealing to an international audience, but why have it set in Montreal when it's in English? Why not have it set in some English speaking Canadian city like Toronto?

You answered your own question there.

The twins being raised and educated in the US makes it seem reasonable, and expected, for them to speak English.

The bigger question is where did the English accent come from?

Baseball lies to us seductively, and we know we're being seduced, and we don't complain.

But everyone else in this movie speaks English too, despite the fact that it takes place in Quebéc.

reply

Incorrect. After the college flashback the film tells us they live in Toronto in 1988.

Even when they're just kids talking about sex in the opening, it's set in 1950's Toronto.

On a related note, how come the English-speaking parts of Canada have bilingual signs yet Quebec if French-only?

An inferiority complex maybe?

reply

That's not true at all. MTL has a large anglophone population. It's maybe a little unrealistic that they don't have more people speaking French in the film, but I found the idea of two English speaking twins living and working in Montreal fairly believable.

whilst Silver snail is correct, I don't remember MOntreal in this one, it is clearly Toronto - the scene outside Wolleck's studio for example
