The Red Doctor Suits

Was there an explained reasoning behind the gowns being red? Instead of white? Do any doctors actually wear this? It seemed nightmarish. Like some weird Middle Eastern ritual or something. I'm guessing it's so any blood that gets on the Doctor isn't obvious?

On my DVD the director said he wanted to give them a creepy look and chose red to give the doctors that look.

That's kind of what I figured.

Scenes presented like that... they just scream David Cronenberg.

Red is not worn in the OR. It is usually lt. blue or a dull green.

He certainly succeeded in that respect. I've only ever seen blue or green before. The red was quite confrontational.🐭

Nice to see the show Hannibal tip its hat to this aspect of Dead Ringers in its third season (while also using a bit of the Tangiers music from Naked Lunch).

I never want to be looking at a bunch of red-draped figures before I go under the gas. That's all I know. The grandeur of those outfits seems to suggest that they'll be presiding over a "really big show" -- like some bizarre offshoot of Catholicism that involves blood sacrifice.

Yeah. Their doctor's gowns were very unsettling. The whole operating room just felt wrong.
