JIM CARREY?!!

Whoa. I'm watching this on AMC for the first time since '88 or '89... and was blown away to see Jim Carrey as the junkie rockstar (1st victim).

"the dead pool" does offer some interesting issues and themes with celebrities and the media......it's probably smarter than what the movie is given credit for.

Agreed. Although the filmmaking is pretty formulaic, it's also clever. Another example of that would be the parodic portrayal of the self-important horror film "auteur" played by Liam Neeson ...

Are you saying that all horror film directors are or wish they were killers? That guy was a major fake - a homicidal bartender masquerading as a rock star masquerading as a director.

Well, Neeson's character isn't homicidal, and he's a real director, unless you mean that he isn't a "real" director (i.e. a hack). Regardless of genre, Neeson brilliantly offers a parodic representation of an "auteur."

"We don't do drugs, Callahan. We do film."

"No more f*c&-ups. And that goes for the rest of you incompetent morons!"

"The tide shifted. The ocean's incompetent, not you. You'll never work on one of my films again!"

"They all hate me. ... It's jealousy, you see."

"Auteur" is the wrong description, and we can't be sure that directors use that kind of language and (wear leather jackets?) and talk with an Irish accent. He's a hack all right. He LOOKED like a barber.

I agree that he's a hack, but he certainly fancies himself as an "auteur," and the media treats him as one. I think that it works as a parody of an auteur, something that you might see on a Saturday Night Live skit ...
