Great Movie

How many people do singles dismiss because they don't have the exact image of who we imagined ourselves with?

Great story about a loving grandmother who wants to see her thirtysomething grandaughter married and not living her life alone; I love when she describes Izzys apartment "she lives in one room by herself like a dog". It's funny because it's NOTHING like that, but that's the way bubby sees it.

Great story telling how Izzy keeps pushing Sam away, first turning him down for the initial date, then becoming curious after receiving the hat as a gift, and then when she goes to thank him at the pickle shop she sees him and realizes he really IS a pickle guy. She can't bear it so she blows him off again. She pawns him off on her friend and then becomes jealous and wants him for herself. The more she sees him the more rediculous she feels until she finally lets him in.

Great story. Very simple, very sweet. Loved it.

I loved it too. I'm so glad it's finally on DVD.

Me too. It's a genuinely sweet, funny, charming and intelligent romcom the likes of which we sadly never see anymore.

I LOVE this movie. My mom had seen the trailer and wanted a copy. So, we got one. Then she decided that she didn't like it but, I was hooked.

I still like watching it and lovingly own copies of the poster and soundtrack.

Very well written. One line I enjoyed that the memorable quotes page lacks:

Riegart: "I said whisky neat, not on the rocks."

In other words, she finally settled for Sam when her other prospects didn't pan out. Nick was a hit-and-run artist who seemed to have nothing much going for him. With Anton she had a lot in common and she desired him but he was a womanizer user who was ready to romance her because he needed a new assistant.

It's kind of a sad statement of love but it's nothing new. Izzy wasn't attracted to Sam the way he was attracted to her. She didn't like what he did for a living and her circle and the things she loved were of no interest to him. Yes, it is important that the person you're with treat you well; with respect, kindness, understanding, and patience but if you are not legitimately interested in or attracted to the other person the relationship will be a struggle.

Sam was deeper than he looked. If you remember, at the nighttime gathering at the bookstore, he says he recognizes some people.

I agree that it seems Izzy changes her attitude pretty quickly at the end, but I like to think it was a legitimate change.

Yes, you are right but I also remember him leaving. That was not his thing; no more than the pickle store was hers. I recall her saying she loved doing what she does. He's as content running the family store with his brother. We know the brother is not in the position to take over so it's a duty that he takes seriously and, I believe, enjoys.

Where would they meet; what's the middle ground? If they got together it's more likely she would have to scale back or even leave her job because she couldn't do both. They live on different parts of town. To have a home and family with Ben, and that is the objective, she would need to change. I don't think he'd want her exactly as she is. He would have to change in some ways too because if she did change he couldn't expect her to be happy without some give on his part. I have a hard time seeing how either of them would do that.

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion but I don't see what it's based on. I think we're led to believe this movie is something it's not. She cries when he's not there so we're to think her feelings for him have changed. He's still there so it's a happy ending. Bubbie is happy and all is right with the world... blah, blah, blah I'm not buying it.

The filmmakers chose to end the movie at that point in their relationship but the story continues on. I do not see a happily ever after in their future. Had there been external forces keeping them apart and they finally manage to overcome those forces so they could be together that would be different. In their case so many things were aligned and pushing them together but it was still a struggle; mostly due to Izzy's immaturity but it's also due to their incompatibility. If they end up together how can they be happy?
