Why did Charlie ...Spoiler

Stay on earth at the end? He stated twice in the movie that on earth he was a nobody, and felt that in space he had a purpose in life. Wouldn't Ug need him now more since Lee was killed? I know he saved the town, and would likely be a hero but eventually people would forget. This bothered me as a kid,and seeing it again it made me wonder. Any ideas?

But he goes from sheriff at the end of 2 to like a hermit in part 3

he had already signed the contract for part 3, and didn't want to have to commute.

The ending seems a little off. I actually wonder if they were struggling to decide what to do with the character. They kill him off, and maybe have Ug replace him, allowing the actor to return. But then they decide to let Charlie live so there would be a happier ending. Ug leaves, and they just have Charlie randomly given a Sheriff's badge, as if that's how that worked. It actually makes sense that he wasn't the Sheriff in the third film. He seemed more determined to be among the alien bounty hunters, so he should have left with Ug. Maybe New Line had plans for a third film, but for whatever reason it just wasn't the version they eventually made.

That never made sense to me either. It's like they didn't know what to do with the character. He clearly had an aversion to going back to Earth at the beginning. I suppose one possible explanation could be that he was just known as a worthless drunk before but now everyone in the town saw him as a hero, making him want to stay due to this newfound respect.
