Frog's smirk at the end scene

What did you make of Frog's smirk, at the end sequence, after Hodges is shot? That was one of the most striking scenes in the movie to me. Throughout the movie, Frog and Hodges chit-chat as though they have a "rapport", and even though Hodges is a cop, and Frog a gang member, they talk to each other like buddies.

It was as if the movie was trying to make a point, that at no time did Frog ever have any kind of respect for Hodges, it was all just a charade to him. In the end, he was glad to see a copper die.

I always thought of it as frog was pissed off at hodges for arresting him and his friends then hodges got his by getting shot and that made frog smile.

Frog had recently helped Hodges by snitching from the joint about the hit ordered on his partner, Pacman. This was their rapport, they didn't mind helping each other in matters like this. Now he figures Hodges owes him one. When the big bust takes place, Frog feels the rapport has been violated. This is why he smirked, feeling Hodges had gotten what he deserved.

There was a lot of assumption in the movie for me:

- Pacman's actual source of his nickname.

- Frog's apparent knowledge that Hodges was shot.

- The determination that T-Bone had revealed the hit on PacMan and Frog was the source of the leak...

There is a number of things for me that didn't add up, but I only really thought about them years later. I saw this in theaters back in the 80's when I lived back home in Southern CA, and it was just all too real for us, and very exposing to what we already knew about LA.

Frog thought that Hodges probably should have looked the other way or perhaps even ran an little interference for him when the LAPD got the call of Rocket's house being shot up. Frog was also dusted out of his gourd. Larry Loony Tunes is laying dead right there on the lawn, for crying out loud. There was no doubt in any cop's mind arriving at that scene what had gone down, considering the identities of the two bodies. So Frog just didn't have his head in the right place. What I couldn't understand is why Hodges was pissed at him. Frog's a gang member, and Hodges had to have known Frog was going to enact some get even for the Crips shooting up his party and killing the lady next door. Hodges was acting like Frog was some kid that he'd signed up for little league to get him out of the life, or something. Guy was a full blown veterano. The payback was inevitable, yet Hodges just seemed appalled that Frog would dare do it.

As far as Frog's rapport with Hodges being phony? Come on. Frog dry snitched on Rocket, which led to that shootout that killed an innocent lady next door. If Frog never tells Hodges that Pac Man's got a green light on him, the division command wouldn't have ordered that crackdown to get all of Rocket's potential hit men off of the streets, and Pac Man would have been vulnerable. It was a huge favor, and it was also a mortal sin according to the code of the street. Frog put his life on the line for Hodges, no mistake about it. But turning the other cheek to the shootout at Rocket's house was not the favor Hodges was going to give him in return.

I think the smirk was because Frog thought Hodges told that he told about the hit on Pacman. He just asked who did you tell? try to do a favor for your partner that led to his apartment being shot up. Which led to the showdown, which led to Hodges being where he was when he got shot. I think the cop that said tampax goes someplace good told who Hodges source was, then T Bone heard it through the jail grapevine.

frog and hodges were civil with one another. they helped each other out. the problem came when frog found out about the hit they wanted to do on pacman. rocket's gang had it out for pacman because of the way they killed one of rockets gang members when he was doing rocket's girlfriend. when rocket and his gang found out someone warning pacman about the hit, they blamed it on frog because he was the only one from the rival gang that could of gotten word to pacman/hodges. so they did the drive by at frog's party because they knew he was the sntich. now frog's gang gets revenge on rockets gangs, which leads to the cops arresting frog's gang, and one of the members shooting hodges. now the reason why frog is smiling is simple. he felt like his trust was betrayed by hodges/pacman. he felt like someone leaked out the information that it was frog that was the snitch. but that wasn't the case. hodges made sure no one knew who the informant was about the hit on pacman. it's just that rockets crew figured it out on their own due to frog being the only one of his gang being in jail the same time t-bone was.

That is what you call a cold blooded killer who felt that Hodges got what he deserved in the end.

The law is the law- no matter how you look at it. Frog obviously dosent look at it that way. If hodges were to turn a blind eye to the gang's reprisal hit on Rocket because frog believes he "owes" him..then it would go against everything Hodges believes in as a law enforcement officer. Sure Hodges strategy was to get to know the guys and "owe" each other for things here and there, but murder (even scum like the crips) is something that cannot be swept under the rug.

Guess he thought something like, "Just another day in the 'hood."
