Other realistic and/or gritty LA cops vs. gang movies?

I have to admit I have loved this genre even before I lived here... and it was one of the main reasons I was so hesitant to move here in the first place. Generally I feel that LA is a pretty safe place to live as long as you stay away from certain neighborhoods, but even the rough neighborhoods are perfectly fine to drive through and stop in various restaurants and businesses without much fear of more than a dirty look or two if you obviously don't belong there.

So what are some other greats of the genre? I can think of TRAINING DAY and maybe END OF WATCH (haven't seen it yet)? DRIVE has a little grit to it but not the most realistic. I haven't delved into the more African-American centric MENACE II SOCIETY or BOYZ IN THE HOOD genre, but are those even cop dramas or more focused on slice-of-life among the economically depressed?
