Oh, say it 'ain't so!!!

I watched Cocoon again after almost a decade, and went to bed with a huge grin on my face. So I stayed up tonight for The Return. I'm half way through and sick to my stomach. How can they do this to these wonderful old people? They've turned them into paper cut-outs...a Zoo of old people. And the music! Dear lord, how can they have done this?! STAY AWAY FROM THIS MOVIE PARTICULARLY IF YOU'VE SEEN THE FIRST ONE.

"Cocoon" is my favourite movie and I remember almost crying coming out of the cinema after watching the sequel - I thought it lacked all of the wonder and scale of the original and was a very by-the-book sequel with no surprises and very tv-movie-like direction...there should have been more focus on the aliens i.e. on the sci-fi angle and a greater adventure than just the rescuing the captured alien plot - and the characters staying on earth undid a lot of the point of their actions in the first film (David and his mother and Jack should have left with them this time instead). "Cocoon" novelist David Saperstein's sequel to that book is called "Metamorphosis" and has some great ideas that would have made a better sequel and it's much grander is scale plus it has an interesting set-up in its ending which was to be continued in a book called "Butterfly" but his third book has yet to be published. However, "Cocoon: The Return" has grown on me with repeat viewings and I accept it as its there and I am glad there was a sequel at least - though the original and the cast deserved a better one. The music is more or less a repeat of James Horner's original score which is fantastic though.
