Possibility for a 'Cocoon' (prequel) or 3

I loved the original film COCCOON, and enjoy watching the sequel THE RETURN on occasion.....I just get bummed out with the sad, depressive ending the sequel has, and the fact that most of the stars have passed away by now.
But I always have these crazy thought/idea in my mind....
with todays computer graphic imagery, wouldn't it be possible to create either another brief sequel (short-film) chronicling the further adventures of the old-folks after they left for the first time, and before returning.....
maybe with CGI graphicsm, and persmission from their surviving relatives, maybe they could use some of the similar facial features.
Another idea, might be to show or to incorporate the early years of WALTER and friends colonizing the Lost Continent of ATLANTIS, and later fleeing from the incoming doom, and briefly self-preservating the remaining 20 Antareans in teh COCCOONS....setting the stage for the sotry in the first movie, and bringing things full-circle.

YOU ARE CREATIVE

YOU MUST BE DESPERATE FOR ANOTHER COCCON MOVIE BUT I THINK THIS IS NOT A GOOD IDEA BECAUSE COMPUTER ANIMATION? cartoons are not a substitute for real solid talent.

Well ...that's just it.
Most, if not all of the major actors who played the main-characters are dead.
So, it would be impossible to have another film featuring them. The idea for a short-film (even if CGI, alas.FINAL FANTASY) would be an omage to the likenesses of the late actors and actresses who appeared in the previous two films ....or if the rights (or permission) can't be secured/granted ...maybe they could animate likeness to the characters, not so much the actors. But that may not work.
I'd just love to see another short-film (30-45 mins) of these characters, either visiting BERNIE, (Wilford Brimley's) & (Jessica Tandy's character), or back in ANTERIA (or wherever the aliens were from). Maybe, even a prequel-to COCOON RETURNS, when the majority of the characters were all alive, rejuvenated and were still together with the rest of the Seniors from the retirement home.

You would still have the characters but the heart put in from the actors would be missing.

Your idea doesn't "stink" and those of us who enjoyed the movie and would like to see more of the movie are not sentimental "saps".

At some point the tech to reconstruct all these characters (and ANY others) in digital simulations that will be virtually indistinguishable from the originals will arrive. (I give it 15 years or less)

The society and technology and values of the Antareans was enormously attractive; and could well serve as a model for the future evolution of our own species.

The cranky coarse folk who did not "get" this movie are, shall we say, missing something essential...and it's not "sentiment" but something far deeper.

As the tech develops it will get cheaper and cheaper to use and making the films you speak of will be a reasonable proposition in the future.

....that is if there IS a future for humanity, given the folks now in charge of things.

Of all the "older" actors, only Wilford Brimley is still alive.

Also alive besides the youngers cast (Guttenberg, Tahnee Welch, Courtney Cox, etc) is Brian Dennehy. A prequel could work if it didn't involve the too much on the oldsters.

reply

Never work, there's no demand whatsoever for a sequel/prequel, with the lone exception of of a few nostalgic saps. Besides, the sequel sucked beyond belief, so why should they?

reply

no. your idea stinks and there cant be a prequel (prequels suck) or a 3rd one. why? because they dont make movies like this anymore. and most of if not all of the actors are dead. why would they be going to atlantis? they are old people! that would be dumb. this isnt some big action flik this is a family type film.

reply

More likely a remake will happen when some of the more contemporary actors we know today, reach the same age as those in these films.

That said, I did like Tahnee Welch. I'd be on board for a sequel if we got to see her again.

Check out the other subject about it not "being dead", there is a true sequel to the book (Metamorphosis), and there is interest in it being made, apparently the author had nothing to do with the sequel to the movie.

As I was watching Cocoon, it also occurred to me that they should make a sequel. Realizing that most of the original talent are no longer available, it would be interesting to see what happens to the folks on their journey in space, and to all the places, things they have seen. Perhaps they all have been rejuvenated to a youthful age, and resembles a person that is in their early 30's. Part of the charm of this part 3 installment, it to further illustrate that these folks are young at heart, because, even though they are still technically in their 80-90s, they have a youthful spirit, and now youthful appearances to match. With today’s effects, they should be able to do a convincing CGI rejuv. The first quarter of the movie could show the wondrous Antaries, and its technology, (techno eye candy), and one adventure and that provides Art/Gwen the kudos to make a case to return to earth, perhaps so their child can see earth for the first time. The story might be about how the seniors were transformed using cocoons, and now that they have returned to with the opportunity to pick up more family members for a final visit, as the Anterians have finished researching this part of the galaxy, and a return visit will not be possible by Art/Gwen Walter, Kitty and the rest. At the end of the movie the whole family is re-united, and they set off in the sun set, over the ocean, with the dolphins squeaking their good byes, and there is the promise of more exciting adventures in space. Lets get Ron Howard to direct this one, it will sure to be a success.

Yes. in the old days talent was required for acting with real people and real motivation for making a film besides money. Making aanother cocoon would be a ploy just to earn money, and it would destroy the originals greatness, which has already been tarnished by a terrible redeemed only by some of the acting.

If its old fasioned of me to think that some films should not have digital sequels that replace the original actors is wrong, then I guess its better than being modern. Replacing actors with digital people would be an insult to their memory. If we were to go back in time and show them how their work would be cheapend throughdigital technology, they would probally drop dead on the spot.

I doubt that there will be another cocoon, it would spoil it if they ever made a sequel or a prequel.
