Dennehy not on boat

Is it just me or does it look like Walter isn't really on the boat in the last scene. Possibly a blue screen. I could be crazy but it looked kind of fishy to me. Any comments?

I totally agree. It made me wonder if he had died or something and they computerized him into the scene.

IF Dennehy used a blue screen, then they all did. Because Ben clearly hugs him.

On page 303 in the book "Idustrial Light + Magic Into the Digital Realm" it says, "For the first unit's shoot of the finale. Brian Dennehy could not be at the location, so ILM filmed him seperately with blue screen and optically composited the actor into the scene later."

Probably Dennehy couldn't make the shootings schedule, so Petrie arranged to have Dennehy do all the scene in one day.

Its only Blue Screen for the final moments. He is really there for the rest of the scene.

No, I thought Walter was there.

Dennehy couldn't make the scheduled filming of the boat finale scene so in some shots is indeed blue-screen superimposed, however he did film some close-ups with Wilford Brimley later on the boat set and these are inserted in the sequence to make it more realistic. Apart from the shots where he's superimposed with the other cast members in full view, if you look closely at the close-ups there are "lookalike" backs-of-heads etc of the other characters behind him except for with Brimley with whom he mainly interacts.

ILM composited him into the scenes with all the cast only the hugging scene was he present with another actor. Amazing work from ILM considering it was 1988 with little to no CGI used in those days!

Having seen it again, you're all right, Dennehy is blue screen for his appearence, Wilford Brimley must have gone along too as he is blue screen for the hugging moment.

You know I never noticed it before. Damn this thread!
