What happend to the other old people from the first movie? Did they ever say why they didn't come back?
I don't think so. Don't remember it being mentioned.

The rest of the elders who left at the end of the first film were conveniently dismissed and unmentioned in its Hollywood sequel ("The Return")!
Check out David Saperstein's original "Cocoon" novel (on which the first film is based - though it is somewhat different), and HIS sequel "Metamorphosis" and the now decades-later recently-published finale "Butterfly" (part 3 of the "Cocoon" trilogy) to see how ALL of the original "geriatric" characters, their companions and alien Antarean counterparts turn out and end up...a great read!
The other old people had no reason to come back, they weren't central to the movie.
