Soundtrack

I loved this movie so much when I was in high school in the late 1980s/early 90s that about 10 years ago, I put together my own soundtrack, using CDs and audio tapes. Kate Bush's "Running Up that Hill", Yaz's "In My Room" and "Only You", and of course, Peter Gabriel's "We Do What We're Told" and "I Have the Touch."

While I have come across several CDs of Joan Armatrading, I have never seen one with "Everybody's Gotta Know" on it, unfortunately.

Also, at what point in the film do they play "Sheperd's Song" by Scott Cossu
and "Ode to Boy" by Yaz ?

reply

I've always kept an eye out for this soundtrack and have never found it.
I think the songs are brilliant, especially 'We Do What We're Told', (which I'm downloading right this minute)

Not sure about the answer to your question though.

reply

No soundtrack was ever released, probably because licensing the songs for a soundtrack would have been too costly.

You should get Cossu's CD REUNION. It's got "Shepherd's Song" and a lot of other wonderful songs.

I am so happy that I found this site! I've been wanting to find this soundtrack for years...Thanks!

That haunting piano piece that they play at several points, including at the end when Jerry is standing with Goober in the boxing ring-- what song is that ? Anyone know ? Is that Shepard's Song ?

reply

that haunting music is from Gabriel's "We Do What We're Told", aka Milgram's 37.

reply

No, we're talking about two different songs. I have We Do What We're Told on tape. That's the song with the drums in the background that they play when Jerry opens his trashed locker, when the kids are standing at the bus stop, etc.

I am talking about the piano piece that they play at the very end when the scene of Jerry/Goober fades out into Archie/Obie. What song is that ?

reply

I thought someone would have answered this by now, but I am still waiting. I have listened to this piece of music over and over again, but no one seems to know what it is. Anone?? know??

reply

I have confirmed that the piano piece is indeed Shepard's Song. Scott Cossu's CD is available on Amazon.com and you can listen to the song.

It is on Cossu's REUNION CD, released in 1990. Here it is

I, too, wondered for 15 years as to what that song was ! Thanks to the fellow who posted the answer above.

THANK YOU so much, I've always wanted to put together that sound track on itunes but was missing that song.

If you like it you might also like George Winston's December, it has the same haunting piano sound.

reply

It would help if you could spell. It's been a long time, but tonight this movie will be on TV on This. Song on You Tube-

hey what is the intro song?

reply

The song played in the opening credits is Yaz's "In My Room."

I can't believe this, I too have been somewhat obsessed and haunted by that piano refrain for 18 years now. It's like the comments of all the others with regard to this soundtrack could have been written by me. We all must share some obscure gene. Thanks to all who have posted!!! I can now check this nagging item off my life's to-do list. You think this movie is surreal...it's probably not as surreal as I feel right now. It's like this whole chain of responses came from out of my own head. Ok...I'll end this now. Thanks again to all!

jesus... I am in tears after listening to that 30 second sound clip of Shepard's Song ... I was brought back to the first time I heard it at the end of the movie when I was in jr. high.

thank you for the info and thank you all for letting me know that I was not the only one who loved this movie. I still have my original VHS copy that my mother gave me. I read the book in 7th grade and saw the movie when it came out when I was in 9th grade and at that moment I had NEVER felt anyone else would understand the isolation I felt at that time.

omg i love this movie and i cried when i hear the song "we do what were told." i have no idea why i just loved it for some reason.

reply

I agree with you guys. The "Shepard's Song" piano piece is haunting.

They play it not only at the end, but also at the bus stop scene when he talks to the girl, telling her that she "was right."

"We Do What We're Told" is also used to great effect ! Both songs use to really move me when I watched this film years ago.
