I THINK THEY SHOULD REMAKE THE CHOCOLATE WAR MOVIE

I really think they should have an updated newer version of the chocolate war it would be great.I just read the book at school, and even though it's really old it would be great if they made a modernized verision of it.

Definitely remake this movie.

I remember reading this book back in high school and seeing the movie with the different happy ending it really was a let down compared to the book.

reply

I think the ending Gordon tacked on is awful, but it's got enough good qualities (the incredible soundtrack, Cort and Glover's performances, the direction) that I wouldn't want to see a remake.

reply

I disagree. Although the ending has been much criticized, it was not a "happy" ending. Archie did not win, nor did Jerry.

Besides, if they remade it, how could anyone top John Glover's performance ? Plus they'd replace the soundtrack with something modern (possibly even rap) which would be outrageous.

This is the definitive version.

reply

Thank you, I agree. This film needs no remake.

The soundtrack was perfect.

John Glover was perfect.

I can't even see anyone else in the lead, either. That kid was well casted too.

reply

I did not see the ending as a happy ending at all... I thought it was actually a sad, disconcerting ending. No one came out innocent.

reply

I would like a remake if it was done well. Yes the soundtrack was great, but besides that, most of the acting and directing didn't really connect with the book. I didn't really enjoy the acting or the way the book was represented.

The ending annoyed me as well. Yes, it wasn't a "happy ending", but the end in the book is much better and shouldnt' have been ruined by these hacks.

reply

yes!!! and they should have dan byrd as jerry renault.

reply

Why "modernize" it? And what exactly is "really old"? Keith Gordon expertly captured the mood and tone of the novel in his film. Any remake would make it an upbeat, hip, urban laugh-a-thon with a tacked on "happy ending". To the current generation hung up on what's hip: sometimes "really old" is "really okay". Learn from it. Don't destroy it.

reply

you thought of this as a funny novel... i thought of it as more of a serious tone.

reply

yeah they should, but don't change the ending like they did in the first one. The ending in the book is suppose to make you mad in some way.

reply

When I'm finished with school and have the resources to, I want to make this movie. I'm not going to change a thing about it in the book. The book was too awesome to change the story. I want unknown actors. And I'm NOT putting rap into it. Somewhere in the next, eh, fifty years or something like that, I will make the chocolate war and the sequel. The second book is great too. That's my life's goal.

reply

No. Leave the original as it was! brilliantly made!
Remakes just suck!

reply

it wouldnt be a REMAKE. since it would follow the novel, not the movie.
i would love if they remade this. great casting for it BUT the changes kind of bugged me. especially the ending

I agree. The 1988 version of "The Chocolate War" is not bad but the ending REALLY lets it down.

Ideally, any remake would stick to the storyline of the book right down to the original ending, which still packs a hell of a punch ('scuse the pun). In terms of casting, I think Shawn Pyfrom would be good as Archie, and Dylan Baker as Brother Leon. Not sure about the rest. Any suggestions? and who should direct?

reply

What if Wallace Langham (Archie) played Brother Leon?? I love the idea of a remake. And it could still use 80's music. Most of the artists that kids listen to nowadays are heavily influenced by 80s artists anyway.

reply

I usually cringe and today's remakes but, I agree on this one. ONLY, if it isn't dragged out in today's typical Hollywood fashion.

It would be good to be created and directed with more FEELING towards the book. This movie was such a letdown (poster is cool, though). I was so excited about it. Maybe I shouldn't have read the book.

I'd also love a remake with the book's ending.

The Parent Trap with Lindsey was X-sell-ent!!!! Leave it alone, it's a good movie that can stand on its own. Does every good book need an exact interpretation onto film? Go read the book, watch the movie, and enjoy, discuss, rip-apart, appreciate the differences, get a feel for the gist of it all and put any insight you might get out of it to good use. Kubrick's Shining blows away King's sanctioned version any day! Purists to hell, I say.

reply

I just finished re-reading the book --- so good --- and pictured Kevin Spacey as Brother Leon. A terrific young actor for Archie is Connor Paolo.

reply

21 years is not "really old".

I can't think of any major social change that's happened in the last 20 years that would make a remake a better film, or make a retelling of the story any more effective than the original. It still feels fresh, and the cast is great.

Making a version truer to the novel is a different kettle of fish.
