6.6 Rating. come on, guys!!

this is at least an 8. I gave it a 10. But 6.6, come on. Get smart.

The world's a hell, what does it matter what happens in it?

Well, taking the "American" view to answer your question, I would guess that a) there's a lot of people that don't want to "read" movies, especially not ones over 15 years old (ie Audrey Tautou isn't in it), and b) if you believe the hype, some people might be "turned off" by the idea of a man and woman who aren't the same color being attracted to each other.

It's sad, I know. But if this film were truly popular, American studios would probably re-make it with the race of the characters switched around (in which case they'd most certainly have sex and lose the entire meaning of the film).

I'm just saying that the people who actually saw it should vote higher. I can understand that some people would avoid this movie altogether, but it's a deeply intellectual movie. I had to see it a few times to fully appreciate it. thanks for the reply.

agreed...i watched it last nite and came here directly to register my vote of a solid 8...a truly beautiful film...i am a huge fan of claire denis--she's an amzing director...and if you liked this film, i would strongly suggest checking out 'beau travail' as well...

as for the imdb rating, i'm not convinced that it's simply a matter of 'people do not want to read subtitles' but more about pacing...i would imagine this film to be a bit slow for your average movie-goer, regardless of the subtitles (and racial overtones)...

but whatever the reason, the imdb rating is totally misleading...this is a great film that should receive much more attention...

I'm afraid she's upped stumps and retired to the pavillion.

I have to watch it again.

reply

it's worth watching at least for the photography, i think.

I second your endorsement of Claire Denis (she's one of my favorite directors) and your recommendation of Beau Travail.

For those who noticed how great Isaach De Bankolé is here as Proteé, I'd also recommend him in Jim Jarmusch's The Limits of Control. Definitely for those who don't have issues with "pacing" as a large attraction of the movie is seeing De Bankolé hold the camera's gaze in a way that borders on zen.

A mid 8 will be a fair rating

reply

I think part of the problem is that the movie is very confused ... if you watch it only once it is VERY easy to not know what's going on a good deal of the time.

reply

It's one of the most pretentious films I've ever seen in my life.

How so? I'm watching it now and not getting that impression at all.

reply

6.6 is too high. This film was incredibly boring. No matter how hard I tried I endedn up falling asleep after an hour of waiting for anything remotely interesting to happen. Gave it a 1/10.

reply

Well, it's 7.4 now, june 2016. So things are improving.

reply

It's currently a 7.3, which seems about right to me.
