The First 45 Minutes is Surprisingly Terrific

I think this is a pretty underrated movie overall with few aspects that haven't aged as well as others (most notably the whole Voodoo subplot) but the buildup of suspense in the first half was really well done. Tom Holland is an admirer of Hitchcock and doles out the suspense very effectively in the beginning.

The second half when Chucky comes alive is not as good, but it is still quite decent and the effects are terrific in certain parts. The climax is also very memorable. Given all that, I'm surprised at the low rating on here.

Its got a good rating for a horror movie. I think only horror movies that are considered classics by the mainstream get the really good ratings anyway. Carrie, Jaws, Exorcist, etc.

Carrie and Jaws are both terrible. And Jaws isn't even a horror movie.

I agree. I mean, I wouldn't go as far as to call it a flawless masterpiece, but it is certainly a good horror film from that particular era. Like I said in a previous post, I really liked the grittiness of this movie. There's just a certain sense of ugliness and a foreboding feeling right from the very beginning. Take the scene where Andy's mom goes out into the rundown alley to buy the doll from the derelict. There is already a sense that something terrible is going to happen before it even happens. It's a feeling that innocence isn't safe in this world. Not only is the city grim and filled with a cast of unsavory characters, but even a child's doll is corrupted and evil.

The voodoo surely was STUPID. Watch Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom to see it done right!

Honestly, Chucky breaks the doll (!) and the guy's arm and leg breaks just like that! Yeah, right.

Childs Play was made to be a who-dun-it type of movie..they wanted to fool the audience into thinking the little boy was somehow doing the murders but blaming the doll and thats what made Childs Play so good and then when we finally know for sure its Chucky, the way he talks, cusses and behavior scares the s#it out of us, this was before Chucky became a Comedian killer as he is in the following movies afterwards.

I agree! Everything up until Chucky coming alive is very suspenseful and well done. It's the scariest part of the movie by far. What we don't see is always creepier.

Holland did a great job with this film...and Fright Night!

I think it would have been a better movie if Chucky never came alive and the kid really was the killer the whole time. Just think how creepy that would have been.

Very true, and as Chucky becomes more heavily featured in the franchise itself, it only makes this beginning sequence stand out even more.

A lot of this is also elevated due to the fantastic acting chops of both Catherine Hicks and Alex Vincent. They really have you fully engaged with their characters the whole way through.

How was the voodoo subplot stupid? They needed something like that in the film in order to explain how Chucky transferred his soul into different bodies, and also why Chucky was vulnerable, and also why Chucky had to continue to transfer his soul.

The only other way to explain all that would be to add a different subplot in which Chucky makes a deal with another demon, or directly with Satan himself.

But they couldn't just remove the voodoo subplot and also not replace it with an equivalent subplot - then the movie would be retarded.
