So what did the boy tell his father?

I guess the biggest burning secret in this film is the conversation between the boy and the father, after the boy had returned home. How much did the boy tell the father about what happened at the sanatorium? On the face value, it appears that the boy didn't tell anything about his mother's affair. But there are subtle cues that, actually, the boy might have told much more, but decided to hide this fact from her. For some reason, the father decided to go along with the act of not knowing. Thus, the film depicted the death of childhood innocence as the boy basically manipulated his father and mother to stay together.

I agree. Excellent examination.

You Say.... Thus, the film depicted the death of childhood innocence as the boy basically manipulated his father and mother to stay together.

This sounds as if it has little to do with childhood innocence. I figured he told his dad that his mom talked about him in a loving way, like she really missed him or could not wait to get back to him. This way the guy/lover gets to be there secret and no one has to ever know who he is. The secret is the BOY AND HIS MOM liked the lover, one was physical and the other was emotional. Why break up his parents marriage when they both got something out of it. They both needed the dad to support them. [he is the one to keep them both stable]I think he[the dad] will change from just what the boy told him, seems as if he never knew how she really was when away from him and it was exactly what she needed to hear from him.
