Bull Durham vs Field of Dreams

This might be a hard choice, but I am going to ask you which of the 2 basbeall movies that Kevin Costner maded in the 1980's, do you like better and why. The choices are Bull Durham and Field of Dreams. There you go, you 2 chocies for this baseball poll.

reply

I have to say Bull Durham because of the writing. The best part of that movie is when Nuke is on the mound talking to himself and thinking about what he should throw. It's classic.

reply

I too have to go with bull durham. Other than James Earl Jones' scenes with Costner there wasn't much too see. Moonlight Graham was an interesting footnote in history but to base 30% of the story to him 30% to questionable facts he digs up on Joe jackson and 30% more to afather and son game of catch. That leaves 10% to some nut who hates his family so much he tears up their cornfield and spends time chasing ghosts around it

As much as I love "Bull Durham", I would say "Field of Dreams" is my favorite. It's kind of hard to compare the two though. Yes, they both are about baseball but the themes are so different. "Bull Durham" has more comedic elements and is about a team, but "Field of Dreams" is about what baseball represents. Now I feel like watching these movies!

reply

Field of Dreams has the 'my dad never played catch with me, so I'm gonna cry' thing goin' for it. But Bull Durham is just fun. And that's what baseball's about, fun. Not crying. There's no cr . . .

reply

I love both movies, and have them both at home. But I have to go with Field of Dreams! I love the mythic/fantasy elements of it, and it does have some depth. Bull Durham is fun, but it is really just a popcorn movie.

reply

Hard to choose, two of my favorites. They are really so different too. If I had to pick just one I could watch though it'd probably be Bull Durham, simply cause I'd rather laugh.

reply

If I want to enjoy watching a film and having a laugh without too much deep emotion I watch Bull Durham. It's an easy watch with which I and some friends get to repeat funny quotes.

If I want to get nostalgic and feel some deeper feelings like the sadness from the loss of a loved one (but in a good way) awakened then I'll watch "Dreams".

Do you think he wants some cheese?

"Bull Durham" is smart and witty and sexy. "Field of Dreams" is treacly,
manipulative nonsense. The best moment in the film is when Costner's character
first meets Terrence Mann; Mann asks him, "Are you from the '60s?"and then
attempts to chase him away with a bug sprayer. In fact, the movie should have
ended right there. Enough with the lionization of the baby boomers, already;
it's largely undeserved.
For genuine tear-jerking sentimental baseball movies, there's always
"Pride of the Yankees," or even "A League of Their Own." And yes, there IS
crying in baseball. Just ask the Yankees.

reply

As a Braves fan, of course I disagree with you Metropolitan :). I love FoD, and think the final scene is one of the greatest ever.

I love A League of Their Own as well, but only because of Tom Hanks. He makes that movie for me, and I don't know how anyone would label it "tear-jerking" and "sentimental".

On a side note...I'm guess it's going to within 2 at the All-Star break. Kinda wish we'd have kept Sosa the way he's flaming for you guys.

reply

There are some touching moments in "A League of Their Own":
Betty "Spaghetti" is informed of her husband's death;
Dottie's husband comes home from the war;
Marla finds love;
The players reunite at the Baseball Hall of Fame;
Jimmy scratches his balls for an hour;
Madonna appears in a good movie, etc.

Maybe I just don't get "Field of Dreams" because it's really more of a
"guy" movie. It's one of the few films that a lot of men will admit to
getting misty-eyed over; it doesn't seem to rate too highly on the
"tear-jerker" list for a lot of women.
Spoke too soon; the Mets are beginning to curdle.

reply

in an interview, costner actually said his favorite movie is for love of the game

reply

Both great but Field Of Dreams because It just stands out more in my opinion.

reply

"Love of the Game" is my favorite baseball BOOK - I thought it sucked as a movie; they totally ruined the book! I'm female, but I bawl my eyes out at the end of that book, while the movie just makes me roll my eyes.

Favorite of those two has to Bull Durham, mainly because of Annie - I love her philosophy where baseball is her religion. I so love her character! And I particularly adore the meetings on the mound - each time I see a real meeting, I can't help but wonder what they're discussing.

I like Field of Dreams, especially James Earl Jones, but it just seems a bit too ponderous - like a 3-hour 20-1 baseball game when your team has the one run. Bull Durham is a 2-hour 2-1 pitcher's duel with a ton of great plays behind the pitcher - one that makes you want to come back and watch another game tomorrow!

Bull Durham is fantastic, I didn't really like Field of Dreams at all.

Field of dreams owns 100%

I prefer Bull Durham. I liked Field of Dreams when I first saw it, but over time it has become too saccharine to me. I can barely watch it any more.

reply

Really tough because they are just too different to choose, but I would go with Bull Durham just because of Sarandon.

reply

Actually hard to decide, but I like the imagination of Field of Dreams ,a story of dreams and hope...truly a father son love/hate story....tough choice however..

reply

Bull Durham because I prefer its down to earth storyline and complex characters. Makes for a more dramatic narrative which audiences can relate. Though I'm fond of Field of Dreams for its optimism.

"I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not".

reply

Bull Durham for me.
I like the actors in Bull Durham better.

reply

It depends on my mood but Field Of Dreams gets the edge

reply

Field Of Dreams is my favourite movie of all time but I love Bull Durham also, probably my second favorite. They both have a character who had dreams of becoming a major league player and they both failed to fulfil their dreams, but whereas Doc Graham was able to find another passion in his life Crash was not able to.Their lives took different paths after failing in the majors, Doc got married and was loved by the people of Chisholm but Crash has nothing else in his life only baseball. Crash is actually a very lonely man just drifting from team to team, his only hope after baseball is to try and make it as a manager. I know Bull Durham is more lighthearted but it's actually quite a sad movie in some ways.

reply

I'll say Field of Dreams because it doesn't have a love story.

I'm sure we all agree that both are better than For the Love of the Game.
