I see that the OP was seven years ago, but since others have recently responded, I'll throw in my two cents.
I like most of the first half of BD with its great scenes and quotable lines, but when Nuke leaves for "the show" it loses not only the baseball element but the dynamic between Crash and Nuke, which to me was the thing that held the first half together. At that point it becomes a completely different kind of movie (a soap opera). It was as if the writers used up their ideas for the movie up to the point when Nuke got called up, but then they didn't know how to wrap up the story and make it long enough to be a feature-length movie. The last part of the movie just feels like an afterthought and filler.
On the other hand, my wife, being not only female but an avid baseball fan, loved the whole thing. Even 25 years after it came out we'd frequently quote BD lines to each other, such as if I was lecturing on some topic she might say, "Oh Crash, you do make speeches", or if one of use was bragging we might say, "I'm the one with a quadrophonic Blaupunkt!", to which the other would usually say "You don't need a quadrophonic Blaupunkt, you need a curveball", or if we saw a woman overly done-up for the place or situation one of us might describe her as being a little "overdressed for the Carolina League".
