'He's a long way from Kansas'

The tagline is wrong. He's from Kansas *CITY* not Kansas. I know it's minor but it nags me.

Actually, in the book, it does say Kansas City, Kansas. KC is on the boarder of Missouri and Kansas, so it's in both states.

reply

Oh, ok. In the movie he just says Kansas City. I stand corrected then.

It's just a play on the line from the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy says, "I think we're a long way from Kansas, Toto." My frends and I say that all the time when we find ourselves some place weird, or (like in his case) in over our heads. Peace

I watched this again a few nights ago (recorded it on MGM channel). I hadn't realized before but I found it funny he said that because his character in The Secret of My Success was from Kansas.

Actually we have no clear idea where (in the movie) he's from.
- He says early on he's from Bucks County (so, Philadelphia).
- He says that doughey model girlfriend found out that he was from NY. Not explained, but maybe he went to school there?
- His first /job/ was with the Kansas City Star.

As far as the Kansas Cities, let's be clear. THE Kansas City, where the Star is headquartered and printed, is in Missouri but it bumps right up against the state line. Much of the metro area by area is on the Kansas side, but only a tiny bit of that is Kansas City, Kansas. And it's sort of odd (the only place in the metro area where the streets go the other way, full of poverty-striken areas, and a couple decades ago they did the merged county/city government to make the corruption more efficient). The rest of the Kansas side is the Johnson County suburbs. I live in the pre-war ring there, and we don't like to be confused with KCK. Lots and lots of them were built in the post-war boom.

I'm lost and confused. I don't remember what I was thinking when I wrote that post from quite a few years ago. So I deleted it, as I no longer can stand by it.

Another thought: Maybe he's not from New York, maybe he is from Kansas or Missouri and the bartender did him a favor by lying to make him seem more attractive.

Also; what do you mean by "Make the corruption more efficient." ?

If you should feel really happy, be patient. It will pass.

reply

Joking... a bit. The city and county governments have their problems with the law and ethics, then and now.

reply

Ok I thought you were joking :). I was going to ask: "Was that meant to be facetious?" But I didn't wanna seem ignorant if you were dead serious ;)
