The Movie That Sent Sean Young Off The Rails

Sean Young and James Woods reportedly had an affair on this film. According to Young, after the movie wrapped, Woods supposedly just took off without saying goodbye and "closing the circle" (Young's words). This evidently made her go a little nuts and that's when she threatened Woods and sent him the stabbed doll or whatever it was. She's never recovered from the negative press that came out after this.

I agree she never did recover from that fiasco. I have to admit I think of this movie I think of her sending Woods voodoo dolls and acting nuts. But I have to say she might have been hard to work with and that is really why she hasn't found a lot of work, on top of her being a little nutty. For the record I understand Woods is very hard to work with. But for some reason men can get away with being difficult and doing nutty things in Hollywood.

Who really knows the truth of all that stuff, but the bad publicity did hurt her career. Heck, if all that happened today, she could simply EXPLOIT all the rumors about her and she would have been an even bigger star. The media would get all over it and we'd be hearing about her all the time. But her issues with James Woods happened pre-internet.
As it is, the last thing she's known for is drunkenly interrupting artist Julian Schnabel during his speech at some event. She did, however, joke about it later during her very brief appearance in Jamie Kennedy's documentary "Heckler", a film I liked very much.
Anyway, I've always liked Sean Young. I thought she was a very beautiful young actress when she came on the scene and has been in a handful of great movies.

reply

Wasn't she just on Dancing With the Stars? I liked her too and I just thought she really didn't get a chance. James Woods was all over the place about it. But later on he acted very contrite about the incident, like it didn't happen. What a weasel.

reply

Man, if she was just on "Dancing With the Stars" then that just totally passed me by. But then that's the kind of TV I simply DO NOT watch. I watched the first seasons of both "Survivor" and "American Idol" years ago and that was it. People at work would talk about these "reality" shows and I just couldn't relate. Anyway...I wonder how long she lasted on the show...she did have some dance training as a teenager, didn't she? Oh, and I just saw "Stripes" again recently -- totally forgot that Sean Young was in that one. Not a big role, and definitely one of her first, but I thought she was great.

You should track down "Heckler", Jamie (sp?) Kennedy's documentary on critics and hecklers. Sean seems to have a sense of humor about that whole thing with Schnabel, who I think is a pompous ass anyway. Hope she's doing okay. Hell, if I were a working actor in Hollywood, I'd probably drink and/or drug all the time too. Being on set all day has got to be boring!

OOps It was Skating With the Stars. She lasted a few episodes. She is also on some other type of reality show. I have to say that I remember her showing up in a Catwoman suit when she did not get the role and had clashes with Oliver Stone. A lot her career problems were caused by her being self destructive. But again I say if she was a male star doing what she did he would get a pass.

reply

Now, I can't wait for THAT movie.

To be fair to her, her version of events is that she turned Woods down, who then bad-mouthed her. He then sued her for $2m, but then settled apparently by paying her $250k - which kinda underlines for me where the truth might lie....

Yes, michaeldecker, thanks for that info. Of course I'm certainly not privy to the real story between Woods and Young (it's really nobody else's business anyway, right?) and it doesn't help that their versions of events have differed wildly and even changed over time. While a monetary settlement was made that effectively ended the weird saga, Woods did initially feel it necessary to take out a restraining order against Young, and that's when everything hit the news.

Sean Young did indeed once say (during an interview in the now defunct Premiere magazine, I think) that after filming wrapped on "The Boost", Woods failed to "close the circle" -- meaning that Woods left without a word, refusing to acknowledge the time he and Young had spent together. Now, exactly how intimate the two had been I have no idea, but at the time Young strongly implied that there had been an affair and that Woods had hurt her feelings because of his callous behavior at the end of filming.

As to her claim that the trouble was actually caused because she had spurned advances by Woods, it would not be the first time Young has said such a thing. She claimed that she was refused the female lead in "Dick Tracy" because she turned down Warren Beatty's advances. So who knows? The only people who could possibly know the real story haven't been talking about it lately. Sean Young had long been considered difficult to work with, even before "The Boost", but it was only after this film that she began to act out in public to such a degree that it hurt her career. Maybe it was just the booze. On "Celebrity Rehab", she's seemingly one of the few SANE ones in the bunch!

Having said all that, an even more bizarre aspect of "The Boost" is that the book upon which the movie is based was written by Ben Stein! Yes, "Bueller...Bueller...Bueller", THAT Ben Stein! Weirder still, the book was actually about QUALUDES rather than cocaine! The book is titled "Ludes" and the film otherwise follows its plot nearly to the letter. I'd never before seen a movie that so closely followed its source book.

Woods' fiancee at the time of the movie was supposed to be insanely jealous and stalked the movie set when Woods and Young were filming together. Some people think he may have filed the suit at his fiancee's urging.

reply

His sues her just because she turned him down, with the result that his fiancée, the media and everybody else are wondering what exactly happened between them? Don't be ridiculous, Sean Young is clearly the problem. Did you forget about her Catwoman audition?

reply

Just a hunch here, but might Sean Young have gone off the rails eventually regardless of this film or James Woods? Could the problem be a bit closer to home here?

reply

Well, I think it goes without saying that she had issues. If her experience on this film hadn't triggered something within her, then I'm sure something else probably would have. She's struggled with alcohol and in following her career in magazines pre-internet, I always thought she had a tremendous ego. She always implied that she was some kind of misunderstood genius. I just thought she was fairly talented, but definitely beautiful. It was sad to see her stop getting work, even if it was her own fault.

reply

This is true. The phrase "ticking time bomb" comes to mind when I hear her name. It makes for an odd experience when I see her onscreen, but she generally gives great performances.

reply

I thought she was good in Blade Runner as well.

reply

Sean Young played the same personality in No Way Out with Kevin Costner.
