WOW!!!

Never heard of this one before (and called 'salute of the jugger' it's not one I'd have ever picked up off of the video shop shelf) But just borrowed it from a friend and I have to say WOW! What a great movie, violent, brutal, pulls no punches and is extremely well made. Why hasn't this ever made it to cult status? Any idea's?

Yeah, I can never get over how completely unknown this movie apparently is. It's one of those little forgotten gems that I just never get tired of watching.

Tell me about it, everyone I mention it to shrugs and claims to have never even heard of it. It definately deserves better coverage.

It's just been released here in the UK as Salute of the Jugger and as you, I'm surprised it hasn't had the sci fi channel leaping to sign it up...It's a million ,miles better than the tripe they tend to make. I think besides the Hitcher, this was Rutger Hauer's finest movie. As for Joan Chen...I didn't realise she was still making movies, what a hottie she was in her day (even though she looks butt ugly in this one) ;-)

Well, I was about to say "what are you talking about, this movie HAS cult status". But I think I was forgetting

a) That most of my friends are into fantasy/scifi games and so on and thus are more familiar with movies like this
b) germany might be exceptional regarding the popularity of this movie - afaik it's the only country in the world that runs a RL Jugger league ;)

A Jugger league??? Coooel! Any TV highlights I can get a hold of?

Yippee Ka yay Mother F**cker!!!

reply

Nah, it's more like a fan project sort of thing, by far not big enough so that regular TV would be interested except maybe for a small reportage once a year on a local channel ... it's even so unprofessional that sometimes you just win your game because the other team doesn't show up ^^

But I am pretty sure you can find footage on YouTube. Maybe search this forum, it has been mentioned already in a thread called "The game is actually played in germany" or along that line.

EDIT:
Here is some nice footage of a tournament in Hamburg
(I am from Hamburg BTW :) )

When u left the video store did you head straight into a liquor store cos the only way u could enjoy this turd is by being blind drunk.

reply

Not at all, I was sober as a judge bud, I personally thought it was a really cool movie considering I'd never heard of it before.

Lemme guess, Philbevs, you didn't like the movie Jugger as well? Cause otherwise there is no possible explanation why you didn't like that movie. It's awesome that the game is actually played. And note that it is outtakes from one game only, you'd find more exciting parts in other movies that are a collage from seevral games. Also, from this video you can pretty much guess the game rules.

reply

I take it you mean Salute of the jugger?

reply

Salute to the Jugger or Blood of Heroes - over here, when you say "Jugger", you refer to both versions. I meant that you are probably not a fan of the whole jugger thing and thus, of course, think that video is pathetic.

reply

Pathetic is a bit strong, lets just say i didnt think it was that great. Dont want to bad mouth someones fave film, we all got our guilty pleasures huh?

reply

Well, the video itself may not be the greatest thing in the world. but it becomes great due to the pure fact that it prooves that the game of Jugger is actually played IRL. It's like seeing the first video footage from mars - it has bad quality, all you see is red rock, nothing happens. But it's a friggin' movie from the mars!

Understand what I mean?

And yeah, we all have our guilty pleasures. I listen to Mike Krüger and am addicted to the geek game Magic. What are your guilty pleasures?

reply

I dont understand what u mean when u say that jugger is played in real life? Concerning the guilty pleasures, films like Cobra, commando, Roadhouse, Red dawn, early Steven Segal and Van Damme...Cyborg is hard to top on this front oh and Pure c-movies like Trancers etc...all good fun.

reply

Erm - you have seen the clip that I posted and that you didn't like? They played Jugger in real life ... they weren't trying to act like the guys in the movie, they are playing the game, they have rules, they are organized in a league, there is a german championship and so on. Hence, they are playing Jugger IRL.

reply

Not seen any clip that you posted so i cant pass judgement on that one.

I agree this film deserves to be better known. The current Region 1 DVD by Lions Gate is very chintzy. A much better quality special edition DVD is clearly in order here.

That's what I thought when I first looked at it, the title sounded like a cheap futuristic war film, I was totally surprised when I watched it. Even the soundtrack was great. It's nice when you do expect little of a film asnd it turns out to be a little gem.

"Hasta la vista, baby."

im wondering how many versions of it there are..
i recently got hold of a copy of it called The Blood Of Heros that ends right after the end of the challenge,i was a little annoyed as i also have a vhs of Salute Of The Jugger with poor visuals(which is why a got the newer copy) but a very different end imo a better one

reply

I've actually always preferred the end right after the challenge. That is the climax, and I always thoguht the movie was really Kitta's quest/story more than Salo's. What is going to happen afterward is pretty evident without spelling it out and lingering.

After that there appears to a version which shortens the extra ending footage to about 3-4 minutes. Its ok. I still don't really like it, and I don't think the extra minutes are handled with as much art as they could be -- feels pedantic, but its short enough that it doesn't feel draggy.

And then finally, so far as I know at least, there is the 104 minute version with the full extra footage at the end. Depsite the fascination with that version by many, I like it the least. Yes it spells out the aftermath, but in a lot of ways I think it kind of betrays the rest of the movie to do so. Its sort of an abrupt turn. Build build build climax... and oh yes, climax does not matter. The final moment with Salo waiting for the juggers up top to come down to play, and the shot of Chen crying as he leaves are good. But otherwise too draggy and too far removed. To me that's the version that feels most INcomplete, because they start telling the story all over again, and then just drop it.

At least the shorter version has a nice clean narrative arc, and then ends once it completes it letting you use your imagination to fill in the rest. The sequence at the end with the music playing over it makes it obvious Kitta, Gar, and Lindo's character are staying, and only a fool would think Lord Vile is going to let Salo back into the Red City, so I have never really seen the great need for teasing all that out. I actually would have liked to have seen a version that does not exist, with the climatic scene, and then just the one more scene after it of Chen in the silk watching and crying as Salo trudges back out of the city to the surface. That was all that was needed I think to wrap it up.
