Was Carney supposed to be gay?

I was curious about the character of Carney? At the end of the movie, Jerome says Don Carney never married? Carney was the only one not to have sex with Rowena? And finally, Jerome in his journal said "there is something about Carney you can't trust, but I can't put my finger on it?" So, it implies Carney was hiding something? I was just curious if anyone else noticed and why the film didn't elaborate on this?

I imagine he is supposed to be gay. However, people on these boards, as usual, always get all huffy when you ask if someone's gay.
He seemed a little effeminate though.

Also, unlike nowadays, people weren't so obssessed or preoccupied with exploring the gay topic. Hence them not getting more into his character's sexual preference.
