Barbra and Goldie

I totally love this movie. Saw it again tonight and it still makes me laugh after all these years.
And allthough Bette and Lily did a more than great job, I somehow wish Barbra and Goldie would have done this movie, as it was written for them and with them in mind. Barbra would have been so much fun in the role(s) of the two Sadies. It's a shame she did so few movies in the 80's and let this one get away.
But again... Bette is just marvelous in this one!

I can`t see Babs playing the role as well as bette. she doesn`t have a very broad comic range.

I just read that in the trivia they were meant to play the roles. I think it should have been the other way around if those two were to have done it. Barbra Streisand would be better as Rose and Goldie Hawn would have been better as Sadie. Goldie Hawn is brilliant at playing a bitch (see the beginning of Overboard for proof) but she can do comic brilliantly as well. Even though Bette Midler did a good job, I can see Goldie Hawn as Sadie. To be honest though, I think Lily Tomlin was perfect as Rose.

'Babs' doesn't have a very broad comic range? Wow, just wow.

It would have been very interesting seeing Babs and Goldie in this movie, but I'm glad it was Midler and Tomlin. They are classic IMO.

No way! My Goldie in it?? She could have done either! She would have made a better Rose!! Not Babs tho!! No way!! Lilly and Bette do an ace job tho!

I can't see Barbara in the Sadie role at all. Babs is not a comedienne. Goldie would have done a much better job in the Sadie role than Babs. Goldie has played rich bitches before and her playing a country girl from West Virginia would have been a hoot. But Bette Midler was perfection in the role.

I want to see a remake of this.............

barbra does comedy well but bette is funnier

IMO I would have liked to have seen Bette keep her role as Sadie but have Barbra take over the role of Rose. As much as I like Lily's performance I think Barbra could have been better.

I'll trade with anyone who has a jaccuzzi!!!!

Love Bette and Lily in this movie.

That being said, some of y'all posting about Barb's inability to play broad comedy....

WHAT'S UP DOC ?(1972)

Check it out. It's one of Barb's better attempts at playing comedy.

The best combination: Bette and Goldie.

Babs is not a comedienne?!? That's outrageous. Check out "What's Up, Doc." Comic genius.

I think Bette and Barbra would have been the best combination; they're both singers, yes, they're BOTH FUNNY, and most significant, they both fave close-set eyes, narrow face, and long noses. Therefore, they look like they could be sisters, even though they're not, which would have made the film better, imo.

Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!

I loved it with Bette and Lily. They made the movie. Would not have liked seeing Goldie Hawn in it although I like her. Would have hated to see Barbra Streisand in the roles.

Lily and Bette are well cast (even though I think Bette played her part a little too broadly). Wonderful as Lily was, I was kind of surprised they didn't offer her part to Dolly Parton since she would have been ideal for the "country" Rose though her city sister might have been harder to believe. Lily's city Rose is more or less the same character as Lily's famous no nonsense "consumer lady" character from the 1970's so this movie might have been written specifically for her and Bette.

reply

Oh they definitely were well cast and though I'm a die hard Streisand fan, I just love this movie and Bette and Lily's acting. Infact, think I'm going to watch it again tonight!

Oh and Dollly Parton? I like her, but I don't think she would have been better than Tomlin.
