It comes down to an interesting concept, made into a film that needed to be told in a suitable amount of minutes, and everything was exaggerated, nothing was too subtle, that's kind of her directing style, and the style of many movies in the 80's. Thankfully not all.
The main concept wanted to deal with two different things, childhood (toys, goofing off etc. and the adult world, business, relationships, sex).
At his age, 13, they tried to do both, with some issues on both of them being at the same time.
But hey it was a cute, entertaining, funny movie with some unforgettable scenes and it was a hit. Now we sit back, watch it again and tear it down, because, that's what we do now on the IMDB!
I think 13 Going on 30 was better.
