Did they overdo Susan's transformation?

When we first meet her she's a chain smoking, workaholic, up tight kiss ass. One date with Josh she bins the smokes, starts wearing her hair down and is infinitely sweeter. I know this was all to illustrate Josh's influence but I think first and second half Susan were far too polar opposite.

Hey! You're not old enough to drink! Now go and die for your country!!!

I don't think you get my point. Whatever she realised about Paul I just felt her transformation was a little overdone.

I know what you mean. Too quick too. Maybe if in one scene her hair was down. Another she ditches smoking, etc.

Hey! It definitely happens IRL

It's all over done.
Her character, his character,
John Heard's character.

It comes down to an interesting concept, made into a film that needed to be told in a suitable amount of minutes, and everything was exaggerated, nothing was too subtle, that's kind of her directing style, and the style of many movies in the 80's. Thankfully not all.

The main concept wanted to deal with two different things, childhood (toys, goofing off etc. and the adult world, business, relationships, sex).
At his age, 13, they tried to do both, with some issues on both of them being at the same time.

But hey it was a cute, entertaining, funny movie with some unforgettable scenes and it was a hit. Now we sit back, watch it again and tear it down, because, that's what we do now on the IMDB!

I think 13 Going on 30 was better.
