Mustard on her face.

Was I the only one who had a dirty thought during this scene.
Do you think it was deliberate to test the dirty minds of the audience, because otherwise that scene seemed to have absolutely no significance.

Well what use are MY brains if I'm tied up with a dumb clunk like you!

Sorry, I didn't have any similar thought. I think that that scene was to highlight the differences between their attitudes. Susan had mustard on her face, and Josh pointed it out. For him, it wasn't any more serious than that, because he was still thinking like a kid. However, she was obviously very embarrassed by something as simple and silly as this. (She had some real self-image issues throughout their relationship, always wanting reassurance and positive comments. "What do you think about, um, me?") For Josh, it was over and forgotten, because that's how kids are.

I thought that Elizabeth Perkins played that part, the emotionally insecure adult, very well, against Josh's pretty self-secure 13 year old attitude. On the rollercoaster, he was having fun, and she was trying to balance (a) having fun, (b) being scared, (c) thinking about what Josh was thinking about her screaming in fear/fun, (d) her appearance, etc. He was just a kid on a roller coaster.

I've enjoyed this show for years and received the DVD recently and watched it again yesterday. I didn't see anything dirty here.

My $0.02.

I just felt it odd that she couldn't feel a foreign substance on her face right away. "Where?" as she moves her tongue awkwardly. Everyone knows when there is a droplet of something on their face unless they are out of it due to drinking or sickness, etc.

IMDb no longer gets my endorsement.

I also remember being puzzled at that scene, especially her expression which appeared to me to be disappointment/frustration. Did she expect him to make a move to clean up the mess and use that as an opportunity to kiss her? I don't even think women would like that. I sure as heck wouldn't, with mustard anyway. Maybe ice-cream or chocolate.

reply

I was always completely repulsed by that part because I do not find her attractive in any way shape or form.

reply

I always thought it was another moment she stepped back to being a kid without realizing it.

The utter embarrassment. The "oh, I'm trying to be cool and I had something on my face the WHOLE time!"

So it was sweet.

reply

Regardless of that, it was disgusting.

reply

she put the mustard on her face deliberately - she was expecting him to lick it off. that's why she was disappointed.

reply

I think it was highlighting the difference between them again- adult and child. She was self conscious; he pointed it out in a very direct way which adults usually don't to other adults!
It was that while message about how we lose that innocence as we get older.
She was embarrassed... But maybe she did also expect a kiss!

reply

She tried to lull him into something sensual but he didn't fall for it.

Contrasts the thought processes of a grown woman and a preteen boy.
