Actually I think the movie was outdated when it first release, it wins on the innocent and simplicity tone. When I watched it tonight, I still love the move. It contains all the power it used to carry, maybe except the costumes.
It does have an outdated 1980's feel to it, a bit odd, take the computer game for example, there were way better graphics for games in 1989, look at what was available for the Commodore Amiga for example, yet they chose to show a game that could have been made in the early 80ies or almost late 70ies. It's also funny that a movie like Home Alone, released in 1990 feels like a completely different era, yet it's only 1-2 year after Big.
Not at all if you see some of the arcade games they play they had good graphics, You say there were way better graphics for games in 1989, But they they did choose a game that could of been very early 80's
That is true except this was filmed in 87 and came out in 88, so not 89 at all
And It does not feel like a different era to Home Alone at all
I saw it in theaters and thought the computer stuff was amazing. The only computers I had been around at that time was an Apple and played Lemonade. Lol So I was in awe at the computer game.
Innocent? I think you need to look at the subtext to the film. There's a lot of dark undertones in this movie. Like the fact that Josh's family thinks he's been kidnapped the entire movie. The fact that Josh is the subject of statutory rape.
The costumes very clearly set this movie in the 80s. But the story is ageless.
These posts are so funny to me since a movie doesn't age, it's immortalized on film forever. It's the same now as it was then, the only thing that's changed is people and their perspectives. I watched this again for my umpteenth time the other day and I never think to myself "gee this looks old / outdated."
