Ebert was way of on his statements regarding "the hunt" scene in my opinion.

That was funny with the final "no it isn't" line, had to get that in there.
The hunt scene is strong but at the point the entire film moves forward into something darker and it is a crucial point in the film.
John Heard doesn't just pop up, his character is necessary and shows how in the end Winger is all alone, she has no family whether with the FBI or Berengers family.
Good film.

It's too bad the link is broken. I do, however, remember the gist of the review when it originally aired. If I recall correctly they both felt the movie was somewhat unfocused and unrealistic as far as the situation Debra Winger's character was in. I'm inclined to agree, although it was nice seeing Debra Winger in her prime.

I found a Ebert review here:

I feel pretty much as he does, as far as the hunt scene being too disturbing, but I think it needs to be there. It is too disturbing, and I felt uncomfortable watching, but it sets the emotion for the whole movie.

In a 1996 interview, Tom Berenger named Betrayed as his favorite film, shrugging off any media criticism with the retort "It was exactly what it was meant to be".
