Does Hillary die in this scene?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiS8YokFzeY I've seen these movie many times before, but I never noticed to think... do you think at 2:15 is the moment where Hillary dies? Look at CC's expression...I stopped and thought that it could be a high possibility based on the facials of CC...what do you guys think? LOVEEE this movie by the way! :')

Veronica 'Ronnie' Miller: Truth only means something when it's hard to admit! Don't you get that?

reply

Yes, I think so.

reply

I have always thought that! I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed how grave CC's face looked and the tears in her eyes and felt this was the precise moment that Hillary dies. I keep telling this to my mother, but she refuses to believe me.

What ever you do, DON'T FALL ASLEEP.-Nancy Thompson RIP

reply

I've never thought about that actually, but know when I looked at the scene again and saw the way she looked at Hillary, and then how the sun set in the background, I am also thinking that perhaps CC's expression and the sunset was a symbol for Hillary's death.

reply

I just saw this movie tonight (not my first time seeing it), and while I didn't think she'd died in that scene, I did think, "This is the last sunset she's ever going to see, and the last time she'll ever be on this beach." So, yeah, I could see this scene being her "death scene."

reply

I don't think she did. I think after she smiled at her she then thought about the reality that hilary was on her last days.

reply

I agree. This is one of Hillary's last days, but she dies soon after offscreen.

reply

Ummm. The movie is called Beaches, because their friendship begins and ends on a Beach. Hillary's words to CC are "I waited for you" meaning she willed herself to live until CC arrives to carry out a dying wish that the two obviously previously planned.

I just watched Oprah's Next Chapter w/Bette Midler (it had been on my DVR for a few weeks) and during that show they had a interview clip w/Barbara Hershey and she referenced this scene as her death scene...

reply

Lol, I remember the interview on Oprah when Midler was plugging the film. Some of the it is on YouTube, (it's when Bette disclosed how hard it was working with Shelly Long), but Oprah insisted that she would receive an Oscar nomination for the scene, even though there was no dialogue.

I think it's interesting 25 years afterwards that there's really any question if she died on the beach. The way Hershey played the scene prior, one wouldn't think she would have made it through the right over.

reply

I always thought the scene with the sun setting was an allegory rather than the exact moment of Hillary's death...

I agree with the poster who sees it as the parallel of the beginning of their friendship, in Atlantic City on the beach to the ending of their friendship, in California on the beach.

Hilary does not die in this scene.

SPOILERS!!!!!!!

How I know:

In the beginning of the movie, we see CeCe practicing at the Bowl for her concert later that night. However, she gets a message (which either says Hilary is very sick or has passed away) and CeCe has to get to SF as fast as she can. The planes are down so she has to drive and that's when the flashback begins.

During the scene when Hilary and daughter Victoria have to go back home from their vacation beach house, Victoria's talking to a boy about going to L.A. to see CeCe in concert (the same concert we saw CeCe practicing for in the beginning of the movie). But she ends up not going because her mom collapses. At this point, CeCe is still in SF, and then we see Hilary hooked up to the machine.

The next few scenes shows the one that you posted: they're on the beach watching one of her last sunsets. Maybe one of the reasons why CeCe's expression changes is because Hilary fell asleep or maybe closed her eyes which made CeCe panic a little. Sometime after that, CeCe had to go back to L.A. for her concert. While in L.A. that's when she receives the news, and CeCe drives up for the funeral.

reply

You have it wrong Kree767 If you notice, CC is wearing the exact same clothes when she is rehearsing and gets the note, as she is when she takes Hillary out of the hospital. She had clearly been driving all night the night before, arrived at the hospital the next day and that day was Hillary's last day as they watched the sunset together. Hillary VERY CLEARLY dies in that scene. If you follow the movie its more than obvious. Beside the fact that Barbara Hershey already confirmed that that scene IS the death scene. I'd think she'd know, since she filmed it.....

reply

Hey Gypsy12,

Yeah you're actually right! I just re-watched the movie and noticed how CeCe is wearing the same outfit when she drives up to visit Hilary in the hospital. So that would indicate she drove up to SF on the same day she left LA.
