Watching with Captions

I had recently watched 'Beaches' muted and with captions. At one point, I noticed that I take one line completely in the wrong context. If you re-watch the movie with captions, you'll see what I mean.

It takes place after we see Hilary crying in the airplane and CC's voiceover is complaining about the 'Return to Sender' letters she's getting from Hillary and how she's Hillary's "Only ethnic friend." Hillary then enters the dining room to sit next to Michael and they talk about what they'll be doing for the day. At one point, Hillary says she's thinking about buying a 'wrench' because "we don't have one."

Now, before seeing the captions, I took this to mean she was thinking about buying a 'ranch' which seems pretty logical. I just found it very interesting that I interpreted 'wrench' for 'ranch.' Hillary was probably thinking about doing some DIY projects around the house with all the 'housewife' time she had.

Thoughts?

You just misunderstood, that's all.

lol. Not too many couples have so much disposable income where the stay at home wife can just buy a ranch cuz they don't have one.

Lol I actually thought the same thing! I used to watch this movie incessantly as a kid (don't ask me why, I mean it's a great movie but it was mostly all over my head as a child), and I always thought it was ranch too!
