I hated that part, even if Baxter was a bad dog, he did not deserve that. Someone should have whipped that boy!

Yeah that boy was mean as hell. I felt sorry for Baxter, that looked pretty real too.

Do you think it was? Don't they have animal protection laws in France?

It's a movie. No animals (including the rat) would have been hurt during the making of it. The scenes featuring Baxter being beaten where obviously staged.

From memory on one occasion the boy was obviously hitting the floor behind Baxter, in another shot the dog is lying still on the floor with the cane not actually making contact with the dog (it's the camera angle that makes it appear to)

That scene was really sad, as was the one with the kid beating him senseless. That boy annoyed me to no end.

How can a dog be bad?

I hated the ending, but glad they didn't actually show the kid hitting the dog.
