Uncommon Valor (1983) vs. Bat*21 (1988)

They both have Hackman in them and they are both set in Vietnam. Other than that, they couldn't be more different.

In Valor, he is trying to get people hyped into combat for a cause and it's your slightly atypical run of the mill action war movie.

In Bat, he is the guy who wants out and war is depicted as a (pointless) bad thing (even if it is a fact of life) that happens to good people.

If you're a fan of Hackman, these two movies make very interesting back-to-back watch.

I like both films (very similar) but I definitely prefer uncommon valor - it's an excellent and surprisingly moving 1980s 'Nam movie.

When he learned his son had passed, man that was sad.

Great question but I have to take Bat 21, because it feels less cheesy and B-movieish. Uncommon Valor is really cool but the quality is more like Missing in Action, which I like also. Bat 21, on the other hand, is more dramatic and serious, and raises more thought-provoking questions.

Plus my grandfather was in Vietnam and flew those planes that Glover flew in Bat 21. Very dangerous job.
