Danny Glover was a very busy man in Bat 21. The Oscar Deuce (O2, a military version of the Cessna 337 which in Vietnam the pilots found that the rear engine was all the armor plate they had other than sitting on a flack jacket - It was later replaced by the OV-10) also carried a Forward Air Controller (FAC) in the right seat who observed the ground on that side and the two worked as a team in directing air traffic for ground strikes, also marking the target with the four white phosperous rockets carried on the wings.
Movies compress not only action but also actors. Danny Glover was not only the pilot of this low and slow aircraft, but also the observer, the radio controller and he marked targets with the Whiskey Pete rockets.
Then he takes off (alone again with nobody riding shotgun) as a Huey pilot and makes a pickup from a helicopter, even though he says to Hackman after they were shot down that the Air Force only let him fly the Oscar Deuce. While it's certainly possible to be qualified in both rotary and fixed wing aircraft, combat pilots don't just hop into whatever is available.
It was a thrill to see the Oscar Deuce in a film. I believe there is only one survivor of this type still flying at the air shows.

It was also a thrill for me to see a film about the old EB-66 Destroyer. It was, while an old aircraft, highly sophisticated aircraft with lots of wild electonic equipment on board. I spent many hours working on the EB-66 during the Viet Nam era keeping this aircraft flying. They were flown out of Thailand.

He took off as a *very bad* heli pilot.

He wasn't a bad helicopter pilot. No one who had been trained as a helicopter pilot as he claimed to have been, could possibly be that bad. And he certainly wouldn't have needed to be told about anything he had the other guy telling him about. Airplane pilots getting into helicopters do better than he was. Anyone flying a helicopter that badly didn't know anything about flying anything.

The airplane in the movie was not, however an O-2, there were no observation windows in the doors or floor. It was just a Cessna 337 painted gray. FAC A/C normally flew with a USAF pilot and an ARVN observer. Also, the callsign "Bird Dog" was a generic call for FAC aircraft. He would have most likely had a number associated with that call (e.g. Bird Dog 33).

There are still O-2's flying. I know a few people that own them, and from time to time I come across them for sale or see them at airports. Great airplanes.

Birddog was trained to fly a Huey, just happened flown one in a long time. That was why the crew chief was giving him a refresher course! Aviator are usually cross trained in other aircraft during their military career.

reply

During Vietnam it was not unusual for aviators to fly solo in aircraft meant for two pilots. Life expectancy wasn't great for aviators there so there was always a shortage of pilots!
